This renovated Melbourne property is located on Heaton Avenue, a tree-lined street with a mix of contemporary and heritage buildings. Prior to refurbishment the 100-year-old Californian bungalow with red brick façades and terracotta tiled roof was in a poor condition.

Chiverton Architects were commissioned to renovate an existing heritage house and add a two storey renovation to the rear of the building that opened up the back of the house to the rear yard. The renovation had to include a new living/ dining/ kitchen space and a bedroom, walk-in-robe and bathroom upstairs.

The site for this new property is located in Camberwell, Victoria on a unique L shape block, overlooking a leafy park. The existing architecture is rendered precast at first floor, sitting on external clinker brick planes at its base. Its living areas were originally situated at first floor.

The architects demolished the study opened the hallway up to the rear yard and a new double height north facing stair void floods the depths of the house with light. The high point of the new roof is setback from the existing ridge line, reducing the apparent height of extension when viewed from street.

This residential development of two townhouses is located on a quiet cul-de-sac at one end and a beach on the other. Given the sites contextual tension between urbanism and landscape, the design is squeezed and defensive looking at one end and at the other end expands while the massing breaks down toward nature.

With Beyond house Ben Callery Architects seek to stretch the boundaries of the typical terrace house. The existing heritage house was south-facing, dark, cold, narrow and overshadowed by neighbouring walls on both side boundaries.
