V&A Exhibition Road Project – Design Studies

The essential elements of the scheme which the V&A wishes to develop are the creation of 1,500 sqm of new temporary exhibition space below ground, with a courtyard at street level, leading on to Exhibition Road. The courtyard will respond to the scheme to re-design the streetscape of Exhibition Road being led by the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. It will provide a flexible platform which may be used for temporary installations and a summer café. The design will allow future generations to build above ground on the Boilerhouse Yard site.

The international architecture practices accepted the commission to participate in the design study to develop concepts for the scheme which will help the V&A to communicate to its Board of Trustees and supporters what is potentially achievable in visual and experiential terms for the site.

The participating practices have been asked to focus on creating elegant architectural solutions for the galleries, entrances and courtyard that will enhance the visitor experience.

The Boilerhouse Yard design study is not a competition. There is no ‘winning’ design, nor will there be formal feedback given on the final submissions, so as not to prejudice any future open competition to be tendered through OJEU.

The display coincides with the V&A’s summer exhibition, 1:1 – Architects Build Small Spaces, for which seven experimental architects from around the world have been commissioned to build individual structures throughout the Museum, in response to the theme of the retreat. The exhibition will allow visitors to experience the structures first hand and explores the modest function of architecture to provide a place for rest and reflection.
