Making memories: The Peckham Toymaker at LFA 2017

London Festival of Architecture: 15-30 June 2017 – at Goldsmiths University, London SE14 6NW

RIBA award-winning Tsuruta Architects will be unveiling a unique collaboration with renowned storytellers London Dreamtime and wood experts FINSA during the London Festival of Architecture 2017.

The Peckham Toymaker, an installation on the forecourt of Goldsmith’s University and online audio tour, plus live events, will allow visitors to discover the legend of The Peckham Toymaker, and his dark and exotic tale of loss and playfulness.

The Camberwell-based architect Taro Tsuruta works extensively with wood and computerised numerical control (CNC) construction methods, fusing technology and design with the many layers of history – some of them unverified – that can build up on a site over time. Memory of place and space is a constant theme in Tsuruta’s work, such as House of Trace, which won the prestigious RIBA Stephen Lawrence Award and six other awards in 2016.

It was Tsuruta’s fascination with incidental discoveries that can be found on a site that led to his collaboration with London Dreamtime, storytellers who tell traditional and folklore tales. FINSA is supporting the project using their Fibracolour Black, a completely coloured board made of MDF.
The intricate sculpture features miniature vignettes like a Victorian doll’s house, allowing intriguing glimpses into the life of the urban legend of The Peckham Toymaker. Webb Yates engineers have worked closely with Tsuruta to help develop the installation.

Taro Tsuruta comments: “I am always uncovering the story of each site, revealing certain elements and concealing others in the new building. These memories and layers are very important in the final design, allowing my clients to tell their own story and pass it on to the next generation. I hope that everyone enjoys thinking about some of the myths around the Peckham Toymaker, and that it can start them thinking about their own environment and what story it might tell.”

Chris Roberts of London Dreamtime commented: “We love telling stories about London legends. The Peckham Toymaker provides a great source of fiendish and dark material, interlaced with south east London folklore and tales of faraway places.”

Rafael Willisch, Managing Director of Finsa UK, added: “We are very proud to be sponsoring The Peckham Toymaker installation. What we love about this project is the story behind it; and that’s what makes it unique. Tsuruta Architects have created an impeccable design and the result is, of course, stunning. We love seeing our products transformed into pieces of art”.
