EC&O unveils plans to enhance one of the UK’s best known venues
Earls Court Building
The multi-million pound development of Olympia would aim to preserve the fabric of the historic buildings while also making the internal space both easier to access and more flexible for organisers to use. EC&O is consulting with stakeholders and residents regarding plans to enhance the venue.
The proposed works include:
– Redeveloping the West Hall within its existing footprint, adding a floor and creating links to the Grand Hall and Olympia Two. The Hall will be designed to be used in conjunction with other spaces or independently, giving Olympia a new found versatility. Plans include incorporating a visitor entrance on Blythe Road to improve the street frontage as well as bringing further flexibility to the venue. The plans will also improve pedestrian access around the building and provide opportunities to enhance the aesthetics of the exterior.
– Refurbishing the Olympia Two building, including infilling the atrium on Level One, to create better exhibition and conferencing space.
A recent exhibition at Olympia allowed residents to discuss plans and the Olympia team are now consulting with organisers. The process forms part of its consultation in advance of submitting the proposals for planning permission and listed building consent to the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham in the near future.
Nigel Nathan, Group Managing Director, EC&O Venues said: “This is an extremely exciting project for Olympia and it is our aim to enhance and refurbish the venue to help it maintain its position as a world class venue going forward. We believe the investment will provide organisers with new found flexibility for their events and enhance the visitor experience.”
As well as the intentions for Olympia Two and the West Hall, EC&O is creating a vision for the whole venue using the best of what the site already offers.

The masterplan illustrates a vision for the entire area around London’s Earls Court Exhibition Centre. The proposed plans for the 28 hectare site, bound by both South and West Kensington, could create 6,000 – 8,000 new dwellings and three million square feet of commercial, cultural and retail space.
Terry Farrell and Partners are working with Capital & Counties Properties PLC (Capco), Transport for London and the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham on the project.
The judges commented: “This project represents a rare opportunity to revive and re-use a scarce and well-located parcel of land for regeneration make connections east to west and north to south that re-connects the disparate urban villages with the history of London’s development.”
