LSE Lincoln’s Inn Fields Building Refurbishment
Jestico + Whiles to refurbish 32 Lincoln’s Inn Fields for LSE
Jestico + Whiles has completed concept designs for the refurbishment of 32 Lincoln’s Inn Fields, the latest acquisition by the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). Originally constructed in 1903, the building is located on the south‐eastern corner of London’s largest garden square which was originally conceived by Inigo Jones in the 17th Century.
Formerly the London headquarters of the Land Registry, the refurbished building will provide LSE with five floors of academic offices and three levels of teaching and student accommodation. The design solution will be influenced by the property’s Grade II listing and its location within the Strand Conservation Area.
Features for conservation include the authentic brick facades and pitched slate roofscapes, which have traditional Dutch‐style gables with ornate turrets at each corner. Jestico + Whiles’ plans for the site will rationalise the original circulation spaces, restore the Chief Registrar’s Room and enhance the main entrance hall, which possesses a number of period features such as mosaic terrazzo flooring, marble columns and decorative wooden panelling.
The 11,500m2 building will be reconfigured to provide a combination of academic and administrative rooms, shared work spaces, open‐plan work spaces and meeting rooms. On the lower floors it is proposed to provide two Harvard style lecture theatres and a range of teaching rooms along with postgraduate facilities. A new contemporary entrance pavilion will also be provided.
As the latest project in the practice’s growing education portfolio, Jestico + Whiles was selected for the refurbishment of 32 Lincoln’s Inn Fields as part of an invited tender process. Jestico + Whiles’ leading status in the education sector now extends to range of schools, Academies and universities across the UK, including two award‐winning schools in Hackney, and the New Line Learning Academy in Kent and the Mountbatten Building at the University of Southampton.
