Construction progress on The Can of Ham building is underway after a six-year break. The tower received planning permission in 2008 but along with several other projects was shelved due to the financial crisis.
Mace has been appointed to build the skyscraper, at 60-70 St Mary Axe, in a deal worth more than £100m.
It is being developed by TIAA Henderson Real Estate, and is expected to comprise more than 277,570 sqft of offices across 24 floors, with the ground floor earmarked for retail space.
The Can of Ham, so called because of its distinctive curves that are said to resemble the rationee’s favourite choice of tinned meatstuff, reports www.cityam.com.
It was originally put forward by Targetfellow, but when the developer entered administration in 2011 it was sold to TIAA-CREF.
Foggo Associates was founded by former Arup Associates partner Peter Foggo; he died in 1993.
