Cartwright Pickard Leads Elephant and Castle Regeneration
London, 10 December 2008: Award-winning architects Cartwright Pickard’s mixed-use scheme in Newington South, London, is leading the way in the regeneration of the Elephant and Castle, one of the largest regeneration programmes in Europe. The Newington South scheme for Wandle Housing Association is the first of the Early Housing schemes to have been awarded planning permission. It is expected to reach Stage E in early 2009, and to start on-site in mid 2009.
Cartwright Pickard’s scheme aims to encourage design excellence in affordable housing and to have a positive impact on the local area though developing what was previously a brownfield site.
Newington South comprises 107 apartments and 6 contemporary townhouses and three retail units. Of the total number of new homes, 97 will be affordable housing units, and 6 for market sale. The majority of affordable homes will be given over to existing residents of the Heygate Estate in the Elephant and Castle.
The Newington South scheme will bring the benefits of intelligent urban housing design to residents, while providing housing that lifts the spirits through incorporating public spaces that will help stimulate a community feeling. The urban design incorporates a courtyard garden at its heart, as well as winter gardens and rooftop terraces. Inside, all the units are spacious and designed to Lifetime Homes Standards.
The project is also environmentally sound, using green roofs and solar panels. The scheme will use 10% renewable energy and is designed to plug into MUSCo (a district energy scheme proposed in Southwark) at some date in the future. The scheme is constructed to combat noise and pollution from the Camberwell New Road by incorporating well-placed duplex apartments.
James Pickard, Partner, said “At Cartwright Pickard we are committed to designing high quality buildings that improve the quality of life for building users and occupiers. The relocation of the residents of the Heygate Estate is a vast project for the borough and we are proud to be a part of the solution, and delighted that our Newington South scheme is in the advanced planning stages.”
Wandle Project Manager Waheed Chaker said “Wandle is thrilled to be initiating this exciting project, and begin to unlock the potential in the Elephant and Castle area.”
