Broomhill Road House, London

This project involved the sensitive restoration and holistic transformation of a Victorian terrace house in East London into a four-storey family home. The design approach was culturally driven, taking inspiration from the family’s Southeast Asian roots and their specific living patterns and cultural practices. Working closely with the client, the design was shaped by the concept of Islamic courtyard houses, leading to the creation of a three-storey gallery at the center of the home. This gallery serves as a focal point around which key spaces like the kitchen, living room, and study are organized.

At the heart of the transformation is the new kitchen, designed as a central courtyard within the home. Positioned at the core of the house, it is not only a place for cooking but also a communal space where the family comes together to bond and share. The kitchen connects seamlessly to the surrounding living spaces through new staircases and a bridge, creating an open and connected atmosphere. From the kitchen, a series of large landscape-steps lead down to a newly created basement family room, further expanding the living area.

The design is characterized by meticulous attention to detail, with a focus on color, finish, and texture. A new material palette was introduced, infusing the house with a consistent and harmonious interior environment. The careful selection of materials ensures that each space is cohesive yet distinctive, enhancing the overall sense of unity throughout the home.

The transformation also emphasizes visual connections throughout the depth of the house, linking the front and rear gardens and integrating landscape elements into the domestic environment. An internal winter garden located in the dining room serves as a transitional space, offering a serene resting place that blurs the line between the interior and exterior, connecting the home with nature in a meaningful way.
