The Concrete Square Tube House occupies a residential neighbourhood in Kyoto, Japan, where contemporary homes, traditional timber dwellings and mid-rise apartment buildings coexist within a varied urban fabric. Rather than sitting within one of the city’s historic districts, the house responds to a modern suburban context while maintaining a strong connection to the surrounding landscape.
The site benefits from an exceptional setting, with a mountain range rising approximately 500 metres to the north and west, while expansive views of Kyoto’s urban skyline extend to the south and east. The design capitalises on these contrasting outlooks by elevating the principal living spaces, allowing the third floor to frame panoramic views of both the natural landscape and the city beyond.

Kanoko Building in Kyoto City
Occupying a prominent corner site, the building presents two highly visible façades, forming a distinctive landmark at the station approach and creating a memorable first impression for arriving visitors. Rather than adopting a conventional cubic form, Eastern Design Office conceived the building as a sculptural composition that exploits its dual street frontages, using bold geometry to invite multiple interpretations. The sharply articulated volumes and dynamic massing generate a strong visual identity, transforming the building into an engaging urban marker whose expressive form responds to its prominent setting while encouraging curiosity and interaction.

Light from the east first strikes the louvered timber screens, where it is filtered before entering the house and carrying soft illumination deep into the interior.
From the south, direct sunlight penetrates the building in a shower-like cascade of linear shadows, tracing shifting bands of light across the internal surfaces throughout the day.

Shimogamo Yakocho House in Kyoto
Designed as Hakko’s first showroom in Kyoto, the project introduces one of the Osaka region’s leading dealers in premium European automobiles—including Jaguar and Land Rover—to a city renowned for its rigorous urban design controls. In response to planning regulations introduced to preserve Kyoto’s historic character, the architecture carefully balances a contemporary commercial identity with contextual sensitivity. Strict guidelines governing roof forms, façade composition and colour palettes informed the design, requiring features such as gently sloping rooflines reminiscent of traditional Japanese architecture and subdued exterior finishes that harmonise with the city’s historic streetscape. The result is a showroom that respects Kyoto’s architectural heritage while expressing a refined, contemporary identity.

A small house for four people and two cats. It has only 100 square meters of floor space. It is standing alone in the corner of a small parking lot like a table left behind at the seaside.

Higashi Honganji Founders Hall Kyoto Building

Traditional Japanese wooden temples embody a construction philosophy rooted in natural materials, craftsmanship and longevity. Rather than being conceived as permanent, immutable structures, they are designed for careful disassembly, allowing individual components to be repaired or replaced as they age. This cyclical approach to maintenance significantly reduces environmental impact by extending the building’s lifespan over centuries. Roof tiles are typically renewed every hundred years to preserve weatherproofing, while the timber framework is periodically dismantled—often every few centuries—so that deteriorated elements can be replaced, ensuring the structure’s long-term integrity without sacrificing its original character.

Light well House, Kyoto Home

Located at the end of a narrow lane, the house occupies a sunken site enclosed by the elevated retaining walls of neighbouring properties to the north and east. These challenging conditions informed a design centred on a series of strategically positioned light wells that introduce daylight deep into the interior while preserving privacy. Uniform in size and expressed as square vertical shafts, the light wells are distributed throughout the plan to create a dynamic pattern of natural illumination. Beyond their role in bringing light into the home, the tubular elements also serve as structural supports for the roof, integrating environmental performance and construction into a single architectural system.
