Nestled within Harvey Nichols’ sixth store outside the UK will be Manolo Blahnik’s first retail space in the Indonesian capital, Jakarta.
With the now established global design brief of locally inspired diversity in mind Data Nature Associates studied indigenous forms and craft, in particular the weaving of leaves to create everyday objects such as rice cake containers – ketupats, furniture, and even the envelope of vernacular building for the inspiration of the spatial concept. Natural colours and hues were selected that emulate both the lush vibrant vegetation and the local rural topography.
The design uses the concept of the woven surface and transforms it to create walls that peal and fold to form the privacy screen to the main shop floor, the shop entrance and the internal walls which double up as the shoe display system. The vertical weave elements are fabricated using laminated plywood with zebrano timber veneer, whilst the horizontal elements are natural hide clad metal tubes. To complement the weave design and colour palette Sori Yanagi’s ‘Butterfly Stool’ in maple veneer plywood and Flexform’s ‘Thomas’ chairs in dark stained ash and upholstered in vibrant green pony have been used.
Finally the folded plywood shoe stands individually perch on the leather rods visually appearing as extensions of the main weave and allowing the shoes to delicately balancing like flowers.
