Web Structures on cloud nine in India
International design consultancy Web Structures has been called in to turn a spectacular vision of an iconic sculpture in the Indian sky into reality.
West Bengal developer Forum Projects has recruited the world’s leading earthquake engineering specialists to help create its dramatic cloud structure above the Kolkata skyline.
Sitting 500ft in the air, “Deya” – which means cloud – will connect the two towers that will make up “Atmosphere” – a luxury £74.8million high-rise apartment project that will be the highest in Kolkata.
Award-winning Singapore-based architect Arc Studio has designed the dramatic development, including Deya, seen as a first for India and described as a “sculpture in the sky”.
Suspended in the air like a cloud, Deya will span 60 metres and its four levels will house swimming pools, a gym, spa, squash and badminton courts, a jogging track and mini theatre. A golf driving range is also planned.
The exclusive sky-bridge will also have an open-air party deck and ampitheatre, along with multiple lounges and spaces for small gatherings.
The luxury towers will have a 400,000sq ft area with stylish villas in the sky. Work on the development, on a site off the Eastern Metropolitan bypass, is set to start soon.
Web Structures will bring its expertise working on tall buildings around the globe to the plans for the 39-storey towers and the iconic “floating cloud sculpture”, which will be lit up by LED lamps at night and will have a ‘silver lining’ with 15,000 kinetic discs shimmering on its surface.
The firm, which has offices in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, London and Shanghai, is also working in India to create the tallest skyscrapers in Pune and in Victory Valley in Gurgaon.
Web Structures is greatly experienced in creating dramatic sky-bridges between buildings – including the one that links three towers at the highly-acclaimed 50-storey Troika development in Kuala Lumpur, designed by Sir Norman Foster.
Dr Hossein Rezai-Jorabi, Web Structures group director, said: “Forum Projects and Arc Studio have come together to create the vision for a really outstanding project. Deya is a fantastic concept.
“It is our task to make their vision a reality using the skills and expertise we have gained on high-rise building projects globally.
“There is a growing demand in India for the expertise and experience our engineers have gained from working on more than 52 residential and mixed-use skyscrapers around the world for the past 15 years.”
He said the demand for luxury high-rise apartments was presenting “new engineering challenges for architects working in India, which is why our specialised engineering expertise is in such demand.”
Web Structures works in partnership with leading international architects, including Foster + Partners, Kohn Pederson Fox (KPF) and Conran & Partners to create iconic buildings. Its team also played a role in the Freedom Towers project in New York.
The civil, structural and geotechnical engineering consultancy is a pioneer of “Fusion Engineering” – using cost efficiencies to redefine engineering excellence through true innovation and design, allowing groundbreaking architecture to become building reality.
It is also a leading expert in earthquake engineering, allowing the safe construction of tall buildings in earthquake zones such as Kolkata. India’s third most populous city is also rated a high risk to damage from winds and cyclones – a major consideration for design-engineering skyscrapers.
As part of the project and the testing process, a mock-up of the development is also being created in Singapore.
