A landmark of Finnish architecture, Helsinki Central railway station opens as a design hotel – Scandic Grand Central is Eliel Saarinen’s masterpiece with an extension that respects the original.
Finnish Architecture
Note from e-architect Editor Adrian Welch:
Back in 1990 I was lucky to win a scholarship from the Manchester Society of Archietcts to study architects in Finland. My proposal was to visit and learn about the generation of architect designers that followed Alvar Aalto.
Naturally I would not be able to resist seeing the works of the 20th Century master on my travels, but I tried to search out newer design practices such as Juha Ilmari Leiviskä and Gullichsen Vormala Arkkitehdit Ky. I spent two weeks in the country, starting in Helsinki, then rotating clockwise from Turku to Pori, Tampere, Jyväskylä, Säynätsalo (for the Town Hall, but also Allto’s small house on the lake), Kuopio, then back south via Savonlinna, Kouvola and a return to the Finnish capital city.
Additions for the Helsinki Architecture Studios page welcome
