Hamburg Architecture Introduction
Hamburg is the major port in Germany and is located in the north of the country. Probably the most celebrated contemporary German building in the city is the new Elbphilharmonie designed by Herzog and de Meuron.
Other major architecture in Hamburg includes the Empire Riverside Hotel, Office Complex Steckelhoern 11 and the Spiegel Group Hamburg headquarters. These buildings can be visited on our Hamburg Architecture Tours.

Famous architects with buildings in the city include Herzog and de Meuron, OMA, Richard Meier, David Chipperfield Architects, J. MAYER H., BIG and Henning Larsen Architects. Other key architects with work in the city include von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp), Miralles tagliabue EMBT and Erick van Egeraat.
The most important contemorary building in the city is the Elbphilharmonie – Elbe Philharmonic Concert Hall, HafenCity. It is an innovative new building by celebrated Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron, easily reached on foot from the city centre to the south.

the new 12-storey-high student residence in Hamburg’s central neighbourhood Münzviertel was built as a part of the steadily growing ensemble of five acute buildings. The triangular shape of these buildings is based on a competition winning urban design from 2001 by Meurer Architekten.

The extension to the head office of the Gebr. Heinemann trading firm in Hamburg’s HafenCity has been completed to a design by von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp). gmp had won the competition in 2013 and, one year later, started with the construction of the office complex in Hamburg’s Elbquartier; the development blends well with its surroundings in terms of aesthetics and shape.
