2018 Winners and Call for Ideas: NYSCA Independent Projects
CALL FOR IDEAS: Independent Projects
Do you have an idea for a project that produces alternatives?
This year, Storefront will once again sponsor twenty independent architecture and design projects through NYSCA.
The Architecture + Design Program of the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) awards project grants for individuals or teams through its Independent Projects category. These grants, of up to $10,000, are awarded to architects, landscape architects, graphic designers, fashion designers, industrial designers, and interior designers to “creatively explore or research an issue or problem in the design, planning, and/or historic preservation fields that advances the field and contributes to the public’s understanding of the built environment.”
NYSCA seeks projects that are innovative in nature and emphasize the artistry of design excellence. Projects may lead to the creation of design prototypes, explore new technology that impacts design, research a topic in design or architectural history, or engage in critical or theoretical analyses.
Storefront will sponsor up to 20 projects for the 2019 calendar year. Priority will be given to applications that align with Storefront’s organizational mission to advance innovative and critical positions that go beyond disciplinary and ideological boundaries.
Deadlines:
Initial proposals: March 9th
Final applications: March 19th

Paranoia Man in a Rat Fink Room
Closing February 18th, 2017
Storefront for Art and Architecture
97 Kenmare Street, New York City
Today marks the close of Storefront’s exhibition, Paranoia Man in a Rat Fink Room. The installation follows a tradition of spatial experimentation at Storefront where the boundaries between architecture, art, and the subject are dissolved into one continuous environment.
“Paranoia Man in a Rat Fink Room” by Jonah Freeman and Justin Lowe. Commissioned by Storefront for Art and Architecture and the New York Comedy Festival, 2016:
photo : Ashok Sinha
Created by Jonah Freeman and Justin Lowe, Paranoia Man in a Rat Fink Room is a historical pastiche of urban and architectural experiences linked through a mise-en-scène comprised of three architectural environments – a Canal Street style kiosk; a comedy club partially inspired by the original Rat Fink Room; and a bathroom that has been converted into surveillance headquarters.
Visit Storefront’s gallery space today from 11 am to 6 pm.
This exhibition is presented in collaboration with the New York Comedy Festival.

Is Storefront for Art and Architecture CLOSING?

“This fall, Storefront’s programming included Work in Progress and Paranoia Man in a Rat Fink Room.
These exhibitions addressed the pressure that real estate is putting on New York City with a reality-based hypothetical question: can non-profit art spaces such as Storefront even afford to stay here?
The answer: YES!
We are not closing. We are not becoming a cosmetics company. With your help, Storefront can and will maintain its place at the forefront of crucial discourse around cities, architecture, and policy.
Won’t you consider making a $100 (or more) tax-deductible donation today or giving the gift of a membership to someone who believes in the power of ideas?
We hope you appreciate our sense of spatial humor.”

WorldWide Storefront: Call for Proposals for Alternative Spaces around the Globe
WorldWide Storefront
September 19 – November 21, 2014
Deadline for Proposals: January 31, 2014
$1,000 in Seed Funding Available
Storefront for Art and Architecture announces a call for proposals for WorldWide Storefront (“WWSF”), a new initiative to provide a simultaneous, multi-locus of alternative spaces around the globe and a digital platform for the expression and exchange of latent desires within contemporary art and architecture practices.
image from Storefront for Art and Architecture
WorldWide Storefront is a mode of action; its aim is to unveil, produce and discuss experimental cultural works on a global scale from local points of view. By using the ability of contemporary means of communication to join space, undo place and avoid time, WorldWide Storefront provides leadership in imagining future modes of cultural production.
Storefront is seeking proposals from individuals or collectives across the globe with curatorial visions that articulate alternative positions within their particular context. Proposals should contain a two-month installation, series of exhibitions and/or events and identify a specific site where the project will be realized in relationship to the curatorial vision. Strong proposals will explore new spaces of cultural action that defy traditional notions of “gallery,” “pavilion,” or “cultural institution.” Proposals should also propose new and innovative ways to digitally engage audiences globally.
All proposals will be reviewed by an international jury of notables in the fields of art and architecture. Selected entries will be part of the WorldWide Storefront program and individuals will receive $1,000 in seed funding to start their project, as well as strategic outreach support and technical and logistical mentorship.
From September 19 to November 21, 2014, all selected entries throughout the world will simultaneously open and have a two-month program of exhibitions and events. All events will be recorded and broadcast through the WorldWide Storefront online platform and presented at the Storefront for Art and Architecture Gallery in New York, which will operate as the central situation room.

Storefront for Art and Architecture Competition
Storefront for Art and Architecture is excited to announce the launching of Competition of Competitions, an architectural competition that dislocates the tradition of competition into radical and renewed spheres and contexts.
Throughout history, competitions have constructed a relationship of servitude between architects and the structures of economic, politic and cultural power. Competition of Competitions claims that the true desires of our present society are outside of the current taxonomy of competition briefs and that architects should be participants in the construction of the questions they are asked to answer.
The intention of Competition of Competitions is to provide and deliver new and relevant forms of engagement and content to the economic, politic and social systems that currently act as the voice of authority for the development of our cities. Competition of Competitions calls on students, architects, artists, economists, philosophers, writers, and citizens at large to create interdisciplinary teams to formulate the questions of our time and commission the visions for the future through the creation of a competition brief.
This is a great opportunity for all those involved in the field of architecture, including students, designers, writers, professors and curators, to get involved in an innovative competition that challenges conventions in architecture. In order to get a diverse and international response we would love to post a call for submissions on e-architect.
The deadline for registration is May 22, 2013 and the deadline for submissions is June 22, 2013.
For more information about Competition of Competitions please visit our website here. Please do not hesitate to reach out to Storefront’s Development Associate, Zeynep Göksel, if you have any questions at all. You can reach her at zg(at)storefrontnews.org or 212.431.5795.
