Opening April 17, 2009

New York, NY – Join us at the Center for Architecture for the Public Art + Architecture New York Exhibition Opening. Starting at 6:00pm on Friday, April 17, 2009, the exhibition will feature photographs by Francis Dzikowski from the new Jean Parker Phifer book Public Art New York.

The images, on view through May 9, represent the wide variety of works of public art in the five boroughs of New York City. Illustrating that public art consists not only of monumental sculpture in outdoor plazas but also decorative sidewalks, sculpted facades, and evocative lighting, Public Art New York broadens the dialogue on how art can complement and enrich architecture and public space.

From Coney Island’s Parachute Jump, to Dubuffet’s Groupe des Quatre Arbres in Chase Manhattan Plaza, to James Carpenter’s “Ice Falls” in the lobby of the Hearst Building, these photos reveal the magnificent range and richness of the works that enliven the New York urban landscape and are accessible for all to enjoy. Kent L. Barwick noted in his introduction to the book, “These striking photographs of both the new and what we thought familiar remind us of the ever-changing and compelling landscape we are so lucky to inhabit and so rarely take the time to see.”

The Center for Architecture will host a related panel, also titled Public Art + Architecture New York, on Monday, April 20, 6:00-8:00pm. Panelists will discuss recent New York buildings that have seamlessly integrated public art with architecture, fusing the artist’s vision into the architectural design.

Participants include artist James Carpenter of James Carpenter Design Associates, architect Todd Schliemann of the Polshek Partnership, and David Thurm, Vice President for Operations at The New York Times. Jean Parker Phifer FAIA, author of Public Art New York, will serve as moderator.

Public Art New York Book
