Warborne Farm in The New Forest National Park, UK
Architect: Pad Studio
Location: New Forest National Park, southern England, UK
Warborne Farm, located within a conservation area of the New Forest National Park was built as a model farm in 1880.
It is now an award-winning organic farm which has won numerous farming awards and featured in several television documentaries.
The Georgian farm buildings are organised in a courtyard arrangement around the Farmhouse and have for many years lain redundant.
Farm diversification is now necessary and the owners plan to offer holiday accommodation on the farm where the tenants can become involved with Farm life and learn more about sustainable living.
The proposed refurbishment provides 5 flexible Farmstay units which can accommodate up to 30 people per week.
Double height top-lit spaces to the living areas add a sense of drama whilst retaining the character of the existing barns.
New mezzanine galleries and stair insertions form a contemporary counterpoint to the agricultural brick exterior and internally the walls will be lined in Hempcrete, a highly sustainable form of insulation.
All the materials used will be natural and as locally sourced as possible. Biomass log burners within each unit provide
a warm focal point and carbon neutral heating source.
Externally the landscaping aims to further increase the rich biodiversity that exist within the farm.
A new gravel parking area is screened by fruit trees and a communal garden area is cut into a new natural meadow grass area. Raised beds are located close to the garden allowing visitors to tend and pick their own vegetables.
The project was submitted for LPA planning approval in May 2010 and is awaiting LPA approval. The Client’s budget is £1M.
