Waingels College Gets Planning
Sheppard Robson has received planning permission for a transformational scheme to deliver a new school. The Waingels College in Wokingham will become a local landmark and the first structural timber school in the UK.
The design comes with high green credentials, proposing a 60% reduction in its carbon emissions through the use of intelligent design and renewable technologies. The building has used a cross-laminated timber system as its structural base.
The school is divided into three pastoral bases which are expressed as individual learning communities. The design breaks down the mass of the school, using natural materials to deliver a building that relates to its users on a more human scale.
The three pastoral bases are distinguished through colour to develop a strong sense of identity and belonging for the pupils. Each has within it a smaller heart space for its own community – a large staircase that can be used as a forum for the pupils.
