The RAF Museum Midlands in Cosford, Shropshire, is undertaking a transformational development programme to create a more immersive visitor experience and to engage with audiences who may not yet identify with the RAF story and the history of British aviation.

The programme includes new spaces designed by LDA Design to extend the museum’s offer.

Plans have been for approved for a new build ‘Collections Hub’, which will enable the Museum to open up its stored collection for the first time.

Hangar 1, which was built in 1938, will be refurbished to house a new Learning Centre and exhibition space that will focus on the RAF’s role over the last 40 years. It will connect to an accessible and engaging landscape which can support outdoor learning and events.

LDA Design Director Dafydd Warburton says the new public realm will be all about discovery, experience and tactile learning. “The Museum wants to strengthen its storytelling and encourage debate across its spaces and programmes. It’s been fantastic working with the project team and GSS Architecture to ensure that the three new outdoor spaces support this ambition, transforming the visitor experience for all ages.”

The new spaces will be much greener with rich swathes of biodiverse planting. Seating will be well-positioned, comfortable and accessible and new pathways will make moving around the site easier. The thinking is that in the future volunteers will be invited to help plant up and look after the spaces.

The development programme has been funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund and is due for completion in 2027.

The RAF occupies two sites, the other is in Colindale, Barnet.
