The Plot 3 eco-home in Wiltshire (UK) is part of a micro self-build community in Chippenham Wiltshire.
Clad in SLP Thermowood to ensure a uniform aging that unifies its monolithic form, it is then defined by a series of openings and protrusions which form shelter from the elements or privacy for the internal spaces while framing the views out into the adjacent parkland.
The main vaulted family space links the front and rear of the site, with the envelope fully removed on both facades to maximise the sense of association. In contrast, the lounge is completely contained with views instead punctured through the envelope, creating a sense of total seclusion. On the lower ground floor, the family bedrooms and bathrooms are arranged around the central stair core with utility spaces positioned against the retaining structures.
The original design was conceived by the owners, architect Sophie Towl, and her husband Ben, who is the Contracts Director at Artel31. The project was then brought into the Artel31 office as a design and build (D&B) project and successfully completed under their supervision.
What was the brief?
To create a light and airy family home filled with spaces for play and work.
What were the key challenges?
Balancing the public and private nature of a family home with the site’s active parkland setting meant that views were blinkered in key locations.
Who are the clients and what’s interesting about them?
Ben and Sophie are a self-build dream team! Ben helps run the construction side of Artel31 (an award-winning design and build firm) his insatiable appetite for mid-century design has enlivened the house and Sophie is an architect for the prestigious Cotswolds firm and has a passion for the garden and interior materiality of spaces. This was a project to build themselves a family home for their growing children.
