Grade II Hampshire Mill Conversion Secures Planning
Dan Brill Architects’ latest project, a high-end conversion of a Grade II listed water mill in Hampshire, has received planning permission.
The Mill, originally built in the 18th century, will be refurbished to pristine condition in order to preserve its heritage. The refurbished area will house a personal office and gym totalling approximately 180m2 and will be complemented by a contemporary structure containing changing facilities. The new extension is opposite the millstream, and is connected to the Mill by a dynamic frameless glass corridor that bridges the stream.
The Mill forms part of a large private estate within a conservation area and adjacent to both a Site of Specific Scientific Interest and a Special Area of Conservation. The contemporary interiors of the gym and office will contrast beautifully with the historic timber structure of the Mill. The new changing pavilion will be clad in FSC certified timber, stained black to ensure it does not diminish the visual impact of the Mill itself.
It is intended that the water-powered turbine will be fully refurbished in the future. The millrace has the potential to generate a significant quantity of hydropower, a sustainable solution that will produce more electricity than needed by the building. Excess power would be used elsewhere on the estate or supplied back to the grid, thereby supporting the sustainable development within the area.
The project will start on site in August 2009, with completion estimated at August 2010.
