The Other Place (TOP) at the RSC in Stratford upon Avon began in the 1970s as a small new writing studio theatre in a tin shed. It was rebuilt as a brick building in the 1980s and in 2005 Ian Ritchie Architects designed the temporary 1040 seat Courtyard Theatre adjacent to the brick “TOP”.

This building, part of Live Theatre’s evolving cultural quarter in Newcastle upon Tyne, has been recognised with an RIBA National Award. The scheme has already received a RIBA Northeast Regional Award, the RIBA NorthEast Conservation Award and the RIBA Northeast Client of the Year Award. The National Award was announced yesterday.

Avery Associates Architects’ new 400 Hall Theatre at Repton School has just won a Royal Institute of British Architects East Midlands Regional Award, and its Building of the Year Award, the top prize for the region. Last year, it won the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors Design and Innovation Award and the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists Gold Award for Technical Excellence.

The award-winning team behind the transformation of the Royal Shakespeare Company’s world-famous home at Stratford-upon-Avon is to provide the concept design of Chester’s new theatre. Council chiefs today (Wednesday) raised the curtain on a star cast assembled to produce a guiding vision for the Borough’s £38m showpiece. Bennetts Associates Architects – one of the UK’s leading architectural practices – will work on the concept design, supported by specialist theatre consultants Charcoalblue and multi-disciplinary engineering consultancy Buro Happold.
