On Friday December 4th 2015, employees, collaborators and stakeholders celebrated the opening of the new Microsoft Domicile in Lyngby, Denmark. The design of the building originates in Microsoft’s approach to work, where cooperation and knowledge sharing are key.
The new domicile gathers Microsoft’s two Danish units under the same roof. The collocation of the organizations is clearly visible in the architectural design. Two cubic buildings, of six and seven floors respectively, unite in a shared atrium that offers space for social and professional interactions across fields of interest. The domicile forms part of a greater urban development, which in time will include residences, shops, cafés and other businesses.
The planning of the building stems from Microsoft’s work methodology based cooperative processes, as described in a 2005 whitepaper by Bill Gates entitled “The New World of Work”. Henning Larsen Architects’ space planners have thus been focusing on creating environments supporting cooperation internally, as well as with clients and partners. This is emphasized through a series of activity-based workspaces of various sizes, from smaller to midsized conference rooms and large auditoriums.
Public programs and communal areas such as a café, an auditorium, and pop-up study places offered to the students of the Technical University of Denmark, are located on the lower floors. Throughout the entire process, Microsoft has wished for an open and inviting environment. This is also translated in the layout of the landscape and the almost invisible transition between in- and outdoors.
The 18,000 m2 (194,000 ft2) building has been developed in close collaboration with Microsoft and the investor, Danica Pension. The team consists of Henning Larsen Architects together with turnkey contractor Hoffmann and consulting engineers Grontmij.

The new Microsoft headquarters will form part of a new attractive urban district in the heart of Lyngby north of Copenhagen, which will connect the knowledge-intensive businesses to the local study community.
With the new headquarters, Microsoft consolidates its activities and employees from the organisation’s two branches in Denmark. The headquarters will constitute 20,000 m2 and will be the future workplace of 900 employees.
The headquarters is designed to showcase new ways of working, attracting businesses from Denmark and abroad who wish to be inspired and create the workplace of the future.
The new Microsoft headquarters is part of the organisation’s overall vision to create the workplace of the future. The building design supports the employees’ individual ways of thinking, working and cooperating by means of a flexible building layout featuring state-of-the-art technologies.
Microsoft will open up the building to allow it to interact with the public. For instance, the building will feature a study area for students from the near-by educational institutions.
The project marks an important step in the realisation of Lyngby-Taarbæk municipality’s visions for making Lyngby one of the leading university cities and centres of knowledge and creativity in Northern Europe. The project forms part of a 40,000 m2 masterplan, which is also designed by Henning Larsen Architects, and which comprises residences and retail.
