NEX WINS CADOGAN CAFÉ DESIGN COMPETITION

Sleek and inventive design chosen for key site in Chelsea

NEX has won the Cadogan Café design competition, a £2 million project for a new café, which will sit near the entrance to the Saatchi Gallery in Duke of York Square in Chelsea.

Widely regarded as an emerging force, NEX saw off strong opposition from finalists Architecture 00, Carmody Groarke, Duggan Morris Architects, Pernilla Ohrstedt & Sarah Price Landscapes and TaylorSnell.

The team’s winning design, an organic coiled form, features a roof terrace and incorporates an ingenious glass wall that rises and falls depending on the weather. Hugh Seaborn, Chief Executive of the Cadogan Estate said, ‘The Jury was won over by NEX’s design, which combines functionality with a sense of elegant self-containment – their building will be sleek as well as inventive and fun.

‘We think it will intrigue passers-by and become a mini-landmark on the King’s Road. We look forward to working with the team as they develop their design for planning.’

Malcolm Reading, competition organiser and Chair of the Jury commented, ‘The Jury engaged in an architectural discussion with the teams that far exceeded the brief. This competition was exceptional in producing diverse, creative solutions but, nonetheless, we arrived at a unanimous decision.’

NEX Director Alan Dempsey said the practice was pleased to have won, ‘We are really delighted that our proposals for the new Cadogan Café have been selected as the winner in this hard fought competition. It was a challenging brief to respond to, and we were fascinated by the opportunity of mixing leisure and public realm uses in such a concentrated form.

‘After thorough analysis, we were convinced that the best approach was an architecture which resonated with the architectural heritage of the site, while providing a contemporary space that has flexibility for year round use. This was the best competition we’ve entered and we are very much looking forward to working with the Cadogan Estate and designing in dialogue with them for a renewed café and Duke of York Square.’

Leading a team which included AKT II, Equals Cost Consultants, Atelier 10, DHA Design and The Enterprise Collective at the University of the Arts Chelsea, Nex will now work with the Cadogan Estate to develop their design for the new café.

The competition for the £2 million project to redevelop the existing café, positioned in a key site in Duke of York Square in Chelsea, was launched in July.

The proposals by the shortlisted teams: Architecture 00:/, Carmody Groarke, Duggan Morris Architects, NEX, Pernilla Ohrstedt & Sarah Price Landscapes and TaylorSnell, will be presented to the competition Jury at the end of November. The winner will be announced in early December.

The teams’ models and boards will also be on display to the public at an exhibition in the Saatchi Gallery for three days in the week beginning 26th November 2012.

One hundred and forty seven architectural teams from all over the world expressed interest in being considered for the project. The shortlist was drawn-up by a selection panel on the basis of the teams’ response to the brief and previous work.

The six shortlisted schemes for the Cadogan Café design competition organised by Malcolm Reading Consultants, on behalf of the Cadogan Estate, will be displayed at a public exhibition held over three days on November 26th, 27th and November 29th 2012.

The images and models of the proposed concept designs will be on show at the Saatchi Gallery in London.

The design competition for the £2 million project to redevelop the existing café, positioned in a key part of Duke of York Square in Chelsea, was launched in July. It attracted 147 expressions of interest and the shortlisted teams include:

SHORTLIST ANNOUNCED FOR CADOGAN CAFÉ DESIGN COMPETITION

The Cadogan Estate today announced the six design teams invited to submit proposals for the new Cadogan Café , in the heart of fashionable Chelsea.

The shortlisted teams are (in alphabetical order):

One hundred and forty-seven teams expressed interest in being considered for the project. The decision of the selection panel, including representatives of Cadogan, Paul Davis + Partners (as masterplanner) and Malcolm Reading Consultants, was unanimous.

Hugh Seaborn, Chief Executive of the Cadogan Estate said:
‘We have been bowled-over by the response to the competition. The care put into the submissions by the shortlisted teams is quite inspirational. What we’re looking for now, is a proposal that is creative, sensitive to the setting, and practical to build.’

Malcolm Reading, who is managing the competition, commented:
‘The proportion of practices that made the longlist was slightly under fifty per cent. Those practices that leapt to the shortlist did so because their submission was exceptional, in terms of presentation, and they had seized the opportunity to add supplementary information to the PQQ; describing why their previous work was relevant to this project.’

‘The panel came to the process without preconceptions about the kind of practices who might emerge; each member of the shortlist made it on their own merits, and it’s great to see two brand new practices in the six chosen. The shortlisted teams now have until 12 November to develop their final submission.’

An exhibition of the shortlisted designs is planned in November, prior to the selection panel interviews in late November.

CADOGAN CAFÉ DESIGN COMPETITION ATTRACTS 147 EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST

One hundred and forty-seven Expressions of Interest were received for the international, two-stage competition to design a new café for the Duke of York Square in the heart of Chelsea, London.

The café site is positioned in a key part of the Square, adjacent to the main thoroughfare to The Saatchi Gallery and set slightly back from the King’s Road.

While architects from 15 countries entered the competition, there was a marked London effect with seventy-six per cent of submissions from 111 firms based in the capital.

Among the applicants were five former winners of Building Design’s Young Architect of the Year award.

The £2 million project will redevelop the existing café, designed by Block Architecture and currently run as a Gelateria Valerie, which has been a great success over the past ten years but which has been overwhelmed by demand. The original Duke of York development was masterplanned and designed by Paul Davis + Partners.

From the expressions of interest a shortlist of up to seven teams will be chosen to work-up concept propositions, for which an honorarium will be paid.

The shortlist will be announced in September and the winner by early December.

The new café project to redevelop the existing café, currently run as a Gelateria Valerie, offers the opportunity to bring world-class design to a key site, which is positioned at the entrance to the main thoroughfare to the Saatchi Gallery, set slightly back from the King’s Road, and a few seconds’ walk from the Peter Jones department store. Hugh Seaborn, Chief Executive of the Cadogan Estate said, ‘We are keen to identify and support emerging talent whilst providing the opportunity of consulting locally from the outset; this is a pivotal site in one of the most vibrant parts of the capital and we are looking for designers with flair and originality, qualities associated the world over with the spirit of Chelsea.’

Malcolm Reading, who previously ran the competitions for the V&A’s Exhibition Road site, the British Pavilion for Shanghai World Expo 2010 and the Aberdeen City Garden project commented, ‘The existing café has been a great success but can no longer meet the level of demand from visitors and locals. The project has the potential to bring new energies to the Square and create a special sense of place.’

A creative exploration of the project is strongly encouraged along with interesting multi-disciplinary collaborations — architect-led, but including artists. Teams should outline ideas on an additional programme of use(s) and user(s) that will give the café a unique identity.

The café should provide for circa 100 covers (60 outside and 40 inside). Total project costs are estimated to be £2 million, including construction, fit-out, fees, VAT and associated costs.

Competitors have until August 20, 2012 to enter the competition. All entrants must follow the registration procedure as explained on the competition website.

From the responses a shortlist of five to seven teams will be chosen to work up concept propositions (for which an honorarium will be paid).

The shortlist will be announced in the autumn and the winning team announced by early December 2012.
