Built in one of Calgary’s original upscale mid-century neighbourhoods, this home was inspired by the long, horizontal lines of the classic California bungalow. Combined with an open floorplan and infused with the amenities of a modern build, the home was designed to accommodate a young family that loves to entertain.
The central great room is the focal point, with vaulted ceilings clad in textured Abodo wood that flows out to the exterior surfaces through clerestory windows, dissolving the boundary between indoors and out. The interior is open and spacious, ideal for entertaining, with features like a folding TESORO wall that opens to a huge back deck. Private family spaces are tucked among the open plan, including a primary suite that can be completely closed off, a cozy inglenook for family
gatherings and separate kids’ quarters in the basement. Oak slat partitions carry the mid-century aesthetic throughout the home, dividing spaces while allowing light to flow between.
From the exterior, deep overhangs protect the interior living areas from overexposure to direct sunlight, and they reach out to create welcoming outdoor spaces adjacent to the home. We additionally used the massing of the home to create a microclimate in the back yard that makes indoor/outdoor living possible even in Calgary’s marginal shoulder seasons.
