Bringing new opportunities for communal life, Stanton Williams’ 7,800 sqm development marks the College’s most significant transformation in over 100 years.

Cambridge City Council has approved Stanton Williams’ plans for a new College Court for Emmanuel College in the historic heart of the Cambridge Central Conservation Area. The proposed 7,800 sqm development on the southern boundary of the College site will provide Emmanuel College with generous new spaces for social and communal life, alongside contemporary accommodation and teaching facilities.

Capturing the College’s distinct ‘spirit of place’ and the varied character of its collegiate courts, the proposals have been developed around communal spaces, and routes between them, which provide opportunities for interaction.

Making a significant step towards the College’s ambition to accommodate all undergraduate students onsite, the scheme creates 50 new student bedrooms and an accessible fellow’s suite across four new buildings, as well as the refurbishment and extension of the Grade II listed Furness Lodge to provide enhanced teaching and social facilities including new seminar rooms, an event space, music practice rooms and a college bar.

A new Social Hub and cafe – in a single storey pavilion inserted between the existing South Court buildings and the adjacent landscape – presents an inviting and inclusive environment for learning and socialising at the heart of the College, bringing together all members of its evolving community in a shared informal setting.

Embedded in the heart of Cambridge, the scheme is both a sheltered environment, and a place engaged with its urban setting. The development mediates between the more formal grouping of collegiate courts and the surrounding urban and residential fabric. Complementing the College’s existing network of varied spaces, new and diverse external areas with a more intimate scale and informal character offer a focus for communal life and multiple routes though the new site.

Dr Mike Gross, Bursar of Emmanuel College, said:
“This project will be transformational. It will be on a scale not undertaken by the College since the completion of North Court in 1914 and will provide new opportunities for us to meet needs that we have been unable properly to address for many years. We intend to strengthen and enhance the College community – new buildings and spaces enabling that community to mix, work and gather in new ways.”

Gavin Henderson, Principal Director of Stanton Williams, commented:
“We feel enormously privileged to be part of Emmanuel College’s vision for the future, crafting the physical environment that will support its evolving community and intellectual endeavour. We’ve sought to understand the unique character and spirit of place created by the College’s existing courts, buildings and landscape, looking at ways in which the scale and character of a new court, and the new Social Hub we are creating, can contribute to this rich network of spaces.”

Environmental Sustainability
The scheme employs a holistic sustainability strategy devised to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions by up to 50% compared to Part L of the Building Regulations. The buildings will utilise Low and Zero Carbon Technology, including on site photovoltaic, heat pump, and Combined Heat & Power (CHP) systems, together with a variety of passive and clean energy measures. The bedrooms have been designed to accommodate future warmer climates without use of air conditioning. Surface water is to be managed with a sustainable drainage system comprising green roof, rainwater harvesting, vegetated planters and permeable paving.
