A. Quincy Jones: America’s Prolific Mid-Century Homes Architect
One of the busiest architects of America’s mid-century modern school, A. Quincy Jones designed over 5,000 structures and elevated the tract house in California from a simple stucco box to a carefully designed home integrated into the natural landscape. Like many of the families who would live in his creations, Jones moved to California after serving in World War II. His designs reflect the optimism of the post-war era, making use of steel, glass, and the artful repurposing of prefabricated industrial units. In 2013, Jones’ work was featured in a three-month-long exhibition at LA’s Hammer Museum.
An associate of modernist real estate magnate Joseph Eichler, Jones helped to develop Palo Alto, California and became a planning partner in the city of Irvine, California, which remains a model for greenbelt integration to this day. A professor and later dean at USC’s School of Architecture, he designed several buildings on campus as well as the 32,000-square-foot “Sunnylands” mansion of Ambassador Walter Annenberg, known as the “Camp David of the West,” and significant homes in Palm Springs, San Diego, and Los Angeles. Although Jones is primarily known for his home designs, including one for actor Gary Cooper, he also designed many commercial buildings, including churches, restaurants and libraries. Jones continued to design and build homes until he died in 1979.
A home designed by Jones in 1973 is now for sale. The 7,141-square-foot home sits on over an acre of landscaped grounds, expertly designed to integrate the indoor-and-outdoor living spaces. The idyllic location inspires serenity with mature trees, majestic palms, and a central courtyard with a striking water feature. Walls of glass encase the house, offering views of the gardens and surrounding mountains. The elevated lot provides an expansive vista, while a private drive offers seclusion.
The two-story house features a peaked roof and an open floor plan with tons of space. Bright white walls contrast with hardwood-and-terrazzo floors for a clean, contemporary look. The expansive central atrium, a hallmark of Jones’ style, includes a fireplace. So does the stunning chef’s kitchen, complete with sleek custom cabinetry, designer appliances, and a large eat-in island. The primary suite offers a private terrace, spa bath, wrap-around windows, and awesome second-floor views. Every detail of the home has been carefully crafted to provide an atmosphere of modern luxury and natural peace.
The estate is located in the heart of Pasadena, the cultural center of the San Gabriel Valley. Located just east of Los Angeles, it offers respite from the hustle and bustle of the city but is only a short trip down the freeway. Downtown LA is only ten miles away, while LAX is 27. The home is located within walking distance of Brookside Park, which features an aquatic center, the historic Rose Bowl Stadium, the Norton Simon Museum of Art, and Pasadena’s lovely Old Town shopping and dining district. Other celebrities in the area include Shia LaBeouf, Terry Crews, Meryl Streep and David Lee Roth.
The Pasadena home went on auction with Concierge Auctions on July 14 2023.
