New Camp Nou Stadium for FC Barcelona
Bloomberg report that the Nou Camp Redevelopment project is no longer going ahead.
Barcelona, the second-biggest soccer club by sales, will cancel the €250 million ($350m) Nou Camp stadium redesign by British architect Norman Foster as part of a plan to reduce spending.
Barcelona Football Club apparently isn’t liable to pay any compensation. In 2007, Foster + Partners won the redesign the 98,000-seat Camp Nou arena with a multicolored exterior influenced by Spanish architect Antoni Gaudi.

Barcelona FC team president Sandro Rosell said before he joined the club on July 1 that he didn’t favour the Nou Camp redesign approved by his predecessor Joan Laporta and intended to make the arena more emblematic. Barcelona FC may work with Foster + Partners on other projects.
The Nou Camp stadium also would have added 10,000 seats, making it the world’s second-biggest soccer ground after the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City.
Carlos Sole, an associate partner at Foster + Partners spanish office, said it hasn’t been officially informed of the decision to cancel the Nou Camp plans. Last year, the Nou Camp project was shelved for 18 months.
Barcelona FC trails only Real Madrid FC in sales among soccer clubs, according to Deloitte LLP. Barcelona Football Club is cutting costs after Rosell’s board revised a 9 million-euro profit in the year to June 30 to a 77 million-euro loss.

Foster + Partners to remodel the home of FC Barcelona
FC Barcelona’s football ground is one of the world’s greatest football venues, is to be extensively remodelled. Following an international competition, British architects Foster + Partners have been selected as the architects for the renewal of the Nou Camp stadium building, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.

The Nou Camp stadium, already the largest in Europe, will be enlarged to accommodate over 106,000 fans, together with extensive new facilities including hospitality and public areas. A new roof will also be created to shelter the fans.
The Nou Camp stadium will be enclosed by a brightly coloured mosaic outer skin that wraps around the building and continues over a new roof. The multi-coloured enclosure comprises overlapping translucent tiles in the club colours. The myriad of tiles can be seen as symbolising the loyalty and devotion of FC Barcelona’s fans worldwide.
The remodelled Nou Camp stadium building retains the essential elements of the original Camp Nou, designed by architects Francesc Mitjans-Miró, García Barbon and Soteras Mauri, which was inaugurated in 1957.
On match nights, the new stadium building will glow, providing a new architectural icon for the city. In the same way that FC Barcelona is ‘more than a club’, the new will be much more than a stadium.

Football is a powerful and democratic force that brings together all social classes in celebration, therefore a stadium, perhaps more than other type of building, is a truly democratic space, the design of a stadium is the greatest expression of an architecture that goes beyond aesthetics to have a social agenda. In this sense I believe that there is a wonderful connection between football and architecture.’

‘We are extremely excited to have won this design competition. In its 50th year this is a fantastic opportunity to give a timely regeneration to stadium building. Our design respects the characteristic asymmetric seating bowl and as well as embodying the club colours in its form, the remodelled stadium will also incorporate the very latest construction technology so that the stadium can remain in use by the club throughout the works.’
