Maaskant Young Architects 2013

The Rotterdam LOLA landscape architects is awarded with the Rotterdam-Maaskant Prize for young architects 2013. The prize goes to LOLA landscape architects because with their designs they shape in their own way a sublime experience in the city and landscape. They combine the knowledge of large-scale ecosystems with their own conception of space. The jury saw in their work an infectious New Romance in which the human experience is the centre point.

As a collective LOLA has everything in home that is necessary to function in this time: professional knowledge on the one hand and on the other hand an open attitude that allows collaboration with other specialists. The ‘Star Maze’ in Groot Vijversburg which LOLA designed in such cooperation was previously published in the Dutch Yearbook for Urban Planning and Landscape Architecture and is expected to be completed in 2014.

LOLA landscape architects (LOst Landscapes) was founded in 2006 by Eric-Jan Pleijster, Cees van der Veeken and Peter Veenstra. The office works on both conceptual and implementation-oriented projects in the inner city, the city edge and the outlying areas. In addition to and in interaction with it, LOLA also moves in the research and educational field. Clients include governments, developers and social organisations.

The ‘Young’ Maaskant Prize, consisting of € 5.000,- and a contribution to a publicity expression, is meant as an encouragement for architects under 36 years and is awarded every two years on the recommendation of an occasional jury. This time the jury consisted of Alex van de Beld (architect-partner at Onix Architects, Stedenbouwers en Ontwerpers), Rogier van den Berg (architect-partner at Zandbelt&vandenBerg architecture and urban design), and Allard Jolles (manager Directie Vastgoed Rijksgebouwendienst). LOLA is the 15th prize winner and will receive the award in November from Ahmed Aboutaleb, mayor of Rotterdam and in this position chairman of the foundation Rotterdam-Maaskant. Previous winners are among others Zus, Adriaan Geuze, Liesbeth van der Pol (former Rijksbouwmeester) and architectural office Mecanoo.

There is also a ‘Big’ Maaskant Prize: a works prize for (groups of) people that significantly stimulate the debate about architecture, landscape architecture and urban design through for instance publications, education or commissioning. Both prizes are named after and started by the Rotterdam architect Hugh Maaskant who made important contributions to the reconstruction of Rotterdam after the Second World War. From his hand are among other things the Euromast, the Groot Handelsgebouw and the Hilton Hotel in Rotterdam.
