Häuser Award Winners
Hamburg, 11th March 2010 – The future has already begun. HÄUSER magazine was looking for innovative single-family houses that meet the challenges of the 21st century and has now presented three outstanding projects with the HÄUSER AWARD 2010. The most important criteria centred on the demands of an increasingly fragmented and aging society: the houses were to feature rooms with high utility value, permit flexible usage and exhibit convincing individuality.
“The architecture of the 21st century has to respond to rapidly changing living conditions and life plans,” explains Wolfgang Nagel, editor-in-chief of HÄUSER. “Accordingly, our expectations were very high – but the award-winners we selected from amongst the 200 entries received had no trouble living up to them.”

The high-class magazine for international architecture, design and luxurious living has been championing the cause of top-quality private house construction with the HÄUSER AWARD for nine years now. HÄUSER will be presenting detailed coverage of this year’s winners in issue 2/2010 (publication date: 15.3.). The prize winners and other exemplary residences entered for the competition can also be viewed online at: www.haeuser.de/award2010
The winners of the HÄUSER AWARD 2010
First place in the HÄUSER AWARD 2010 goes to architect couple Jens Ludloff and Laura Fogarasi-Ludloff from Berlin.

On the former border strip in Bernauer Strasse, they built an urban terraced house on a trapezoid-shaped plot that combines a spacious interior with a high degree of creative individuality. The fully glazed southern facade ensures excellent lighting conditions, an atmospheric living experience and high energy efficiency. According to the jury, the house convinced them not only because of its high urban development and interior qualities but because of its forward-looking spatial concept as well.
Second place was awarded to the design by Paul de Ruiter, whose lakeside house for a Dutch art collector couple near Amsterdam manages to open up completely to the surrounding countryside whilst simultaneously providing enough space for numerous works of art.

The kitchen, dining room and terrace flow into one another; sitting in the middle of the living room, you feel as if you are out in the garden that stretches all the way to the shore of the lake. The jury’s verdict: the house accomplishes the elegant balancing act of mediating between the magnificent location and the practical interests of its art-collecting occupants.
The jury awarded third place to a six-storey apartment and office building that Armand Grüntuch and Almut Ernst built in Berlin-Mitte.

Spacious rooms and high loggias combine the luxury of a villa with the flair of a big-city loft. Like a modern detached home in the countryside, this townhouse has views of the greenery outside and even boasts little gardens in the back yard and on the roof. The way the building marries this almost rural idyll with a thoroughly metropolitan flair is unparalleled.
The HÄUSER AWARD 2010 was held in collaboration with Schüco, the Verband Privater Bauherren e.V. (VPB) and Callwey Verlag. The winners will receive prize money totalling 15,000 euros. In addition, the VPB will pay the owners of the three winning houses a bonus of 1000 euros each. The jury line-up for the HÄUSER AWARD 2010 included Berlin architect Regine Leibinger, Klaus Becker (Schüco International KG), Thomas Penningh (Board Chairman of VPB), Michael Frielinghaus (President of the Association of German Architects) and HÄUSER’s editor-in-chief Wolfgang Nagel.
