BCSC Supreme Gold Award
LIVERPOOL ONE IS BCSC SUPREME GOLD WINNER
BDP’s masterplan for Liverpool One, the new 42-acre retail district in the heart of Liverpool city centre for client Grosvenor, is joint winner of the BCSC Supreme Gold Award. The exclusive Gold Awards are leading accolades within the shopping centre and retail destination industry.
They are designed to reward excellence in retail-led developments and recognise projects that generate improvements in the quality of the built environment. The other joint winner was Westfield London, for which BDP was lighting designer of the main malls and entrances. Both schemes were also Gold Award winners in the In-Town Retail Scheme (more than 300,000 sq ft) category.

Neil Varnham, Chairman of the BCSC Gold Awards Jury said: “Liverpool ONE is probably one of the most challenging regeneration projects of our time – achieving the maintenance of the urban grain, with a revitalised retail offer linking the scheme to the dock area. It is undoubtedly a benchmark for the UK shopping centre industry in demonstrating successful delivery of the Government’s urban agenda. It has truly regenerated one of our most well known cities.
Terry Davenport, head of BDP’s northern retail team and the man behind the Liverpool One masterplan, said: “The recognition for Grosvenor’s Liverpool One by the industry’s leading award caps a remarkable achievement for the project. It is seen nationally and internationally as creating the highest quality buildings, streets and public spaces that have had a truly transformational impact on Liverpool city centre.
The BDP team worked on all facets of the project; masterplanning, concept and technical design through to landscaping and lighting. The whole process being a remarkable team effort. Liverpudlians are rightly proud of their city and what has been achieved over the last few years.”

BDP WINS TWO BCSC GOLD AWARDS
4 Dec 2008
Two BDP designed shopping centres, Victoria Square in Belfast and Silverburn outside of Glasgow, won Gold awards at last night’s BCSC awards dinner held at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London.

Gold awards are given by the jury to any project that they consider demonstrates innovation and excellence, regardless of size or category, and are recognised as the top awards within the retail property industry.
BDP’s head of retail Peter Coleman said “BDP creates urban environments that respond intelligently to place. Victoria Square is an excellent example of an economically important and ambitious scheme reinstating the Victorian city streets, while Silverburn extends and regenerates an existing neighbourhood. We are delighted they have been recognised as such.”

Victoria Square, designed by a full interdisciplinary BDP design team, opened to the public this year on 6 March. With a construction cost of approximately £165m, this landmark mixed-use regeneration scheme has changed the skyline of the city with its dramatic glass dome. The scheme is based on an open street model more prevalent in mainland European cities: it is an urban grain streetscape connecting with the city, and establishing new relationships between previously disjointed areas of the public realm.
The citation reads ”This is an engaging development in an area of Belfast desperate for change. The scheme has created a unique retail and food and leisure offer, with innovative design spread over two levels. Anchored by a 18,500 sq m House of Fraser Store, the scheme has attracted a formidable retail line up including top fashion brands housed in well designed units. With its unique central viewing platform linking all levels, the scheme offers accessible and inviting integration.”
Victoria Square includes approx 63,000 sq m of retail floorspace over three floors, anchored by a flagship House of Fraser store, as well as a multi-screen cinema, food court and restaurant terrace, 106 apartments and a two-level basement car park for 1000 cars.
Silverburn opened its door on 25 October 2007 in Pollock on Glasgow’s south side, one of the most deprived areas in the UK. Built on the site of the old Pollok centre, the 30 hectare site boasts 80,000 sq m of prime retail and leisure space with over 4,500 car parking spaces, and an upgraded transport interchange. A further phase of restaurants and cafes opened in early 2008.
The vision for Silverburn is to revive the civic and community heart of Pollock, creating a quality environment, with a range of uses and powerful sense of place that can live up to the role as a primary retail destination within the central belt of Scotland.”
The citation reads “This substantial out-of-town scheme is anchored by Debenhams and Tesco, with an array of significant national retailers featuring innovative, inviting shop designs and frontages. The sharp design has a regenerative effect on the surrounding area.
BDP has had seven retail-led schemes open globally in the past twelve months, including the 42 acre retail-led mixed use Liverpool One regeneration scheme, Victoria Square in Belfast, Islazul in Madrid, Freccia Rossa in Brescia, Italy, Silverburn in Glasgow, Elements Square in Livingston, and most recently Waterfront City in Melbourne.
Victoria Square won in the in-town retail scheme (more than 300,000 sq ft) category, and Silverburn won in the out-of-town retail scheme category.
