The GippsTAFE Learning Centre, Leongatha
The GippsTAFE Learning Centre in Leongatha is amongst the first Environmentally Sustainably Designed regional TAFE (Technical Training) buildings in Victoria, Australia.
The 1650sqm 5 Star Green Star building includes wind scoop ‘fairings’ on the south elevation which direct ventilation into teaching spaces. The expanding scale of these elements echoes the experience of accelerating out of town into the country.
The built contours in the landscape plan relate to viewlines from the parallelogram classrooms. The external shell folds down to create external classrooms of diverse spatial qualities, at the same questioning the Australian veranda typology.
As well as interacting with the regions climate, the project also creates a functional link with the Leongatha Education Precinct. By co-locating the Institute with secondary and special schools and other training providers, the building establishes educational pathways that give a variety of choices to students in the South Gippsland and Bass Coast regions.

The striking external facade is exceptionally low maintenance and durable using Yakisugi, a traditional Japanese charred timber technique on the north side and heritage Z600 galvanised steel across an unbroken ridgeline and three sides of the building.

The client and his family desired a slower pace of life: they needed a site surrounded by nature in a secluded setting, yet still within a commutable drive to Melbourne.
