LOS ANGELES – Building on 25 years of design practice in the United States and abroad, partners Michael Palladino, Jim Crawford, and Alex Wuo are pleased to announce the founding of the Los Angeles-based architectural firm STUDIOpractice.

Guided by the principles of collaboration, sustainability, context, order, and daylight, this represents a new era for the team that was originally founded as the West Coast branch of Richard Meier & Partners. Their internationally recognized, award-winning work has spanned across the fields of academia, fine art, commercial, institutional, and civic building design, with notable projects including the San Jose City Hall and Civic Center, Edie and Lew Wasserman Building at UCLA, the United States Courthouse in San Diego, and many others.

“Over the last two decades, our Los Angeles studio has designed a broad range of buildings in the United States and overseas,” said partner Michael Palladino. “Along with state-of-the-art drawing, modeling and rendering tools, our team relies heavily on sketches and hand-crafted models to communicate our vision through all phases of the design. The name STUDIOpractice represents a way of working and is an acknowledgement of our dedicated team of architects and designers, who have worked together for years with a shared vision for inspiring architecture.”

STUDIOpractice takes its origins from founding partner Palladino’s relocation to Los Angeles in 1986 to establish Meier’s West Coast office and support the Getty Center project, which was finished eleven years later in 1997. Jim Crawford joined him in 1988 and Alex Wuo joined the practice in 1995. Given the exceptional talent and experience demonstrated by the Getty project team, the Los Angeles partners decided to transition the project office to be available to new clients with a focus on public sector architecture in the United States and abroad. The team has completed a broad range of projects in the United States, Italy, Singapore, China, Kuala Lumpur, and Australia at every scale and level of complexity.

The office’s projects have been the recipients of numerous awards and accolades within the design industry. These include AIA California Council Honor Award for the Edie and Lew Wasserman Building at UCLA, the GSA Design Awards Citation and AIA San Diego Energy Efficiency Integration Award for the San Diego Federal Courthouse, AIA California Council Merit Award for Gagosian Gallery Expansion, and the AIA Santa Clara Valley Special Honor Award for the San Jose City Hall and Civic Center. Michael Palladino is recipient of the prestigious Rome Prize for the year 2000–2001, and the 2005 Gold Medal from the American Institute of Architects Los Angeles. In 2008, Palladino was elevated to Fellowship in the AIA.

STUDIOpractice will continue to operate from their Westwood studio.
