Casa Akiga, Cabo Velas, Guanacaste

photo : Thibault Cartier
As one moves deeper into the site, the architecture gradually reveals itself through a carefully choreographed sequence of spaces. Immersed within the surrounding jungle, the residence fosters an intimate dialogue with its immediate landscape, where dense vegetation frames views and softens the boundary between interior and exterior. At the same time, carefully positioned openings maintain a visual connection to the distant ocean, creating a compelling tension between enclosure and openness. This dual relationship—being deeply rooted within the forest while orienting towards the expansive coastal horizon—defines the character of the home, shaping an architecture that is both grounded in its landscape and attuned to its wider setting.

Casa Komorebi, Bahía Ballena

photo : Depth Lens – Alvaro Fonseca
Perched high in the mountains above Bahía Ballena on Costa Rica’s Pacific coast, Casa Komorebi is conceived as an architecture shaped by movement, light and the surrounding tropical landscape. Rather than occupying the site as a singular volume, the residence unfolds as a series of interconnected pavilions linked by open-air walkways and bridges, creating a carefully choreographed sequence of spaces that encourages continual engagement with the landscape. Sheltered beneath a single expansive umbrella roof, these transitional routes weave through gardens and open courtyards, dissolving the boundary between architecture and nature. The result is a home that embraces the rhythms of the tropical climate, where circulation becomes an immersive experience and everyday living is defined by openness, connection and a constant dialogue with its mountainous setting.

Villa Nuri, Reserva Conchal, Guanacaste

photo : Alvaro Fonseca – Depth Lens
Perched on a hillside overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Villa Nuri is conceived as an architecture shaped by topography, light and the natural movement of air. The residence unfolds as a vertical sequence that responds directly to the site’s steep gradient, transforming the ascent through the house into a carefully choreographed spatial experience. A robust, grounded base anchors the building within the terrain, while the upper level opens towards expansive ocean vistas, dissolving the threshold between interior and exterior through generous glazing and open-air living spaces.

Casa Solai, Santa Teresa

photo : Alvaro Fonseca – Depth Lens
Two timber-clad pavilions rise lightly above the jungle canopy, framing sweeping views across the Pacific Ocean while responding sensitively to the site’s lush tropical topography. Elevated within the landscape, the volumes establish a measured dialogue between architecture and nature, balancing expansive outlooks with a strong sense of immersion in the surrounding forest. At the heart of the composition, a central vestibule serves as the home’s primary organising element, linking the principal suite with the guest accommodation and establishing a fluid sequence of interconnected spaces. This restrained architectural arrangement creates a residence that is both tranquil and elemental, where structure, landscape and climate combine to shape a deeply immersive living experience.

Rio Perdido – West Bungalows, Guanacaste

photo : Alvaro Fonseca – Depth Lens
Nestled on a raised peninsula between two converging canyons in Costa Rica’s Bagaces County, the Rio Perdido West Bungalows are immersed within an extraordinary landscape where the cool waters of the Río Blanco meet the geothermal currents of the Río Perdido. Long inaccessible and largely untouched, this secluded canyon environment provides the setting for a collection of sensitively positioned guest pavilions that establish a close dialogue with the surrounding forest and river corridors. Carefully integrated into the site’s dramatic topography, the bungalows minimise their visual impact while maximising engagement with the landscape through elevated viewpoints, natural ventilation and seamless indoor–outdoor living. The project transforms a once-overlooked wilderness into an immersive retreat, where architecture frames the experience of Costa Rica’s unique ecological and geological character without competing with it.

Villa Áurea, Tamarindo, Guanacaste, Costa Rica

photo : Studio Saxe
At Studio Saxe, architecture is conceived as an extension of the natural landscape rather than an intervention imposed upon it. Responding to the challenges and opportunities of sloping terrain, each project is shaped by the site’s contours, allowing the building to emerge as a natural continuation of the land. Carefully calibrated forms, terraces and spatial sequences mirror the topography, establishing a fluid relationship between earth and sky. This integrated approach positions architecture as a mediator between landscape and habitation, strengthening the dialogue between built form, climate and terrain while fostering a deeper connection to the surrounding environment.
