Starting the Summer Semester 2021, Ute Schneider will bring in her expertise regarding spatial, constructional, and aesthetic development of the city and the territory at the Institute of Urban Planning, Landscape Architecture and Design at TU Vienna. Special attention is paid to the historical, cultural, social, political, and economic dimensions of urbanism.
It is about comprehending the spontaneously generated and the planned urbanism and understanding how urban development can be influenced through design and action. Ute Schneider defines the theme of living together, co-existence as a focus. As she says: ‘Cities should provide a place for everybody. To achieve this, a process of Co-creation and Co-operation is key to be capable of creating cities that allow diversity and the co-existence of difference.’
Ute Schneider’s mission is to create connections and active exchange between practice, research, and teaching of Urban Design. She promotes an integrative approach that attempts to generate design added value through interdisciplinary links and the simultaneous consideration of all scales. The aim is to encourage students to develop their creativity and to awaken their enthusiasm for urban design and architecture and the integral connection between these disciplines. ‘The understanding and sensitivity of the young generations are crucial because they will live and plan our planet. It is about providing students with tools to develop suitable answers and solutions for our rapidly changing living environments, both during their studies and in the future,’ says Ute Schneider.
In that sense, the awareness of nature-based solutions to address the ever more evident impact of climate change is fundamental. The tasks go far beyond the mere design of space and have to deal directly with organisational, climatic, social, economic, and political phenomena and parameters. ‘We are part of nature, needing it for our wellbeing, so we need to find a way to co-exist with it,’ says Ute Schneider.
After being trained as a carpenter and having gained several years of experience as an interior designer, Ute Schneider studied at the University of Stuttgart, Germany, from 1990. She graduated there in architecture and urban planning in 1998.
Ute Schneider worked in various German and Dutch internationally operating architectural offices during her studies, including Neutelings Riedijk Architecten. In 1998, together with three partners (Ippolito, Fleitz, and Weismann), she founded the architectural practice Zipherspaceworks in Stuttgart with a focus on working on various disciplines at the intersection of urban planning, architecture, exhibition design, product design through to graphic and web design. In 2002 she founded her own office, ‘umaoffice’. In 2003, Ute Schneider started her collaboration with KCAP, from 2006 on in the newly opened Swiss branch in Zurich, and took over the directorship there in 2009. She became a partner of KCAP in 2016.
In addition to her work as an architect and urban designer, Ute Schneider has worked on various exhibitions and publications about KCAP. She is a frequent lecturer and a valued member of a wide range of international selection commissions, juries and advisory boards.
