The Sixth Crossing at Dubai Creek will span 1.7-kilometers (1-mile) and rise 205-meters (673-feet) – making it the largest and tallest spanning arch bridge in the world – with six traffic lanes in each direction plus two lanes for the extension of the City’s Green Metro network as well as a sustainable transportation station, pedestrian walkways, and multi-modal access to the future Dubai Opera House
NEW YORK, NEW YORK and DUBAI, UAE (04 February 2008) – FXFOWLE INTERNATIONAL’s proposal for the architectural design of a 1.7-kilometer long (1-mile) and 205-meter tall (673-feet) bridge in Dubai was selected by the country’s Roads & Transport Authority (RTA) in a major international design competition. The firm’s winning bridge design is poised to join five existing Dubai Creek crossings (four bridges and one tunnel), further advancing the infrastructure and transportation initiatives in Dubai, UAE. FXFOWLE’s design for the Sixth Crossing at Dubai Creek makes it the largest and tallest spanning arch bridge in the world.

“We are extremely pleased, and honored, that our design for Dubai Creek’s newest Crossing Bridge will be adopted by the Roads & Transport Authority,” stated Sudhir Jambhekar, AIA, LEED, Senior Partner at FXFOWLE INTERNATIONAL. “The bridge’s design was inspired by multiple sources, each evoking similar imagery – from the rhythmic grace of Dubai Creek’s current and the elegant splendor of the sand dunes adjacent to the City, to the lighting patterns of the lunar cycle and the design of the future Opera House – resulting in a final structure with a graceful bifurcated arch and a form that activates the creek, frames the future Opera House, and links several of Dubai’s districts. We believe that our bridge design is not merely to link the City’s cultural and commercial developments or ease congestion, but an opportunity to connect people both physically and emotionally by creating an iconic landmark, destination, and gateway between the old, the new and the future Dubai.”
The Sixth Crossing at Dubai Creek will unite the areas of Jadaf on the Burj Dubai Side to the west of the creek to the developments of the Lagoons and Festival City to the east. The crossing bridge will provide six traffic lanes in each direction plus two lanes for the extension of the City’s Green Metro network as well as a sustainable transportation station, pedestrian walkways, and at its midpoint, an amphitheatre, ferry terminal, and multi-modal access to one of the world’s future leading cultural institutions – The Dubai Opera House. Once complete, FXFOWLE’s Sixth Crossing at Dubai Creek will be a signature piece of infrastructure; symbolizing Dubai’s commitment to innovation, design, and culture.
