Dublin Grounds of Remembrance Award

PLANT Architect Inc.’s Ohio-based project Dublin Grounds of Remembrance is the recipient of the 2013 EDRA Great Places Award in the Place Design Award category. The Environmental Design Research Association recognized the work for its concern for human factors in the design of built environments, and for its connection between design research and practice. The award was presented to the firm’s partners at the EDRA Awards Banquet on Saturday 1 June 2013 in Providence, Rhode Island.

This is a one-acre park that honours the service of veterans, and revitalizes the City’s heritage settlement. The project eschews a traditional monument in favour of promoting the act of habitual walking and social gathering, reinforcing the journey of remembrance and creating new significance for the land. The team highlighted the existing site assets to create a unified vision and coherent identity, including integrating into the design the site’s preserved ravine and American revolutionary era heritage cemetery.

Megan Canavan, Public Information Officer for the City of Dublin, describes the site’s legacy and ongoing transformation: “…the City needed a public space where we could recognize veterans, current members of our armed forces and their families. [It]…has been a place of pride for the community…[and] will continue to benefit generations of reflection and commemoration.”

PLANT’s winning submission was also selected for inclusion in the 2013 Healthy + Healing Exhibition, curated by Anne Tate. The show ran from 29 May to 1 June 2013.
