The external metal cladding is inspired by the random appearance of books on shelves – the upper floors of the building will also create a new window on the Cardiff skyline with dramatic views over the city.
Shops and restaurants along the Mill Lane façade complement the current thriving café quarter and create an exciting gateway for people arriving at the nearby bus-stops.
The general components of the building consist of library and retail uses at the ground and mezzanine Levels with 4 floors of dedicated library above finishing at the top with a partial plant floor. The library area provided is 55,000 square feet, of which 5,000 square feet is on ground Floor. The rest of the ground floor accommodates A3 Retail units comprising approximately 16,000 square feet area.
A major driver for this project was the Bespoke BREEAM Assessment.
BDP’s Sustainability group guided the project team throughout the development of the design, working with them and providing recommendations for delivering a more efficient, sustainable building.

By implementing the principles of sustainable design from the early stages of the project, the team was able to deliver an ‘Excellent’ rated building.
