2015 Taiwan Architecture Awards
The First Prize goes to the Master Plan and Bamboo structures for the Yunlin Agricultural Fair
After inspecting each of the nine shortlisted projects and through debates, jury of the 2015 Taiwan Architecture Awards finally selected the master plan and the very simple, even roughly constructed bamboo pavilions by Archit. Yunlin is an agricultural county of Taiwan and had suffered poverty first, then heavy pollution when gasoline factories entered, claiming to improve the economy of the destitute countryside. In the new century, Yunlin struggles to reconstruct its declining agriculture and dilapidated rural communities by calling for public awareness of the exploitation of farmers and the abuse of the environment.
Yunlin Agricultural Fair is to empower food growers, manufacturers and suppliers. The Fair brings consumers to the producers so they will know how each product has been handled. In this way, producers won’t have to rely on corporations to distribute their products. The master plan of the 18-hector site is a reflection on the environmental crises Yunlin is facing, such as drought, pollution and deterioration of landscape. The riverlets go across the site take household waste water and filter it several times with natural resources. In a few months, insects, birds among other lives began to perch, even settle here.
The bamboo structured canopy and pavilions decide the axis of the site, providing a welcoming image of the main entrance. Vendors display their products along, and visitors are easily attracted to them.
Although bamboo is not a new material for building, the operation and experiment of Archit, with extremely limited budget, is to test out how it is possible for local people, with available and affordable resources and techniques, to make the best use of locally grown
bamboo- the most common material with least carbon emission. The jury praises the designers’ complete effort in understanding the properties of bamboo and the possibilities of it for the business not only of construction but also of agriculture.
Archit was found in 2000 by husband and wife architect Kan Min-Yuan and architect Lee Lu-Chih. All their works are closely attached to the life in rural Taiwan. http://www.archit.com.tw/
