Convento tavern: the nerve center of this town, El Viso del Alcor, a small town in Sevilla, a place of crossroads and encounters: women on their way to the church, children play with the ball, romantic walks on summer nights, lemon slush and orange blossoms. There is room for everything here. In this tavern children still run in and reach the bar as best they can, to ask for a glass of water on their way home from school, a very village thing, which is unfortunately being lost.

“When I got this commission it was very exciting for me, to refurbish the village bar, in the center square, where I had grown up. And I don’t call it that because this is a small town and it’s the only bar in town. In fact, if there is one thing in this town, it is bars, but this one is special, it is the most central bar of the town and with the greatest tradition, in front of the Convent, a place that is the protagonist of Holy Week and where all the processions take place,” says Alejandro Cateto.

The starting point was given in a natural way, this is a tavern “lifelong”. Here we set out to rescue the natural materials and finishes of the classic Sevillian taverns, such as its wooden bar, the use of lime mortar and hydraulic tiles. Without forgetting the classic demijohns.

The earth colors connect us with the essence of the village, while the mixture with purple tones, links us with the Holy Week, and with the brotherhood of the neighboring convent.

At the level of detail, the old tavern had an endless number of pictures of Holy Week without any order or uniformity throughout the space, this is something very typical of the Sevillian taverns. Here we wanted to recover that detail but in a much more harmonious and orderly way, using a more contemporary and current form of exposure.

In addition we can find elements, such as candles, running through the different spaces and that connect us with that sacred, intimate and paused atmosphere, evoking the religious spaces around, creating a calm and serene atmosphere.

Taberna Convento: centro neurálgico de este pueblo, El Viso del Alcor, un pequeño pueblo de Sevilla, lugar de cruce y encuentros: mujeres camino de misa, niños con la pelota, paseos románticos en las noches de verano, granizadas de limón y flores de azahar. Aquí cabe todo. En esta taberna los niños todavía entran corriendo y alcanzan la barra como pueden, para pedir un vaso de agua al volver de la escuela, una cosa muy de pueblo, que desgraciadamente se está perdiendo.

“Cuando recibí este encargo fue muy emocionante para mí, reformar el bar del pueblo, en la plaza del centro, donde me había criado. Y no lo llamo así porque esto sea un pueblo pequeño y sea el único bar del pueblo. De hecho, si una cosa hay en este pueblo son bares, pero este es especial, es el bar más céntrico del pueblo y con mayor tradición, frente al Convento, lugar protagonista de la Semana Santa y paso de todas las procesiones.” comenta Alejandro Cateto.

El punto de partida se dió de manera natural, esto es una taberna “de toda la vida”. Aquí nos nos propusimos rescatar los materiales y acabados naturales de las tabernas clásicas sevillanas, como su barra de madera, el uso del mortero a la cal y las baldosas hidráulicas. Sin olvidarnos de las clásicas damajuanas.

Los colores tierra que nos conectan con la esencia del pueblo, mientras que la mezcla con los tonos púrpura, nos enlaza con la Semana Santa, y con la hermandad del convento vecino.

A nivel de detalle, la antigua taberna tenía un sinfín de cuadros de Semana Santa sin ningún tipo de orden ni uniformidad por todo el espacio, esto es algo muy típico de las tabernas sevillanas. Aquí quisimos recuperar ese detalle pero de una forma mucho más armónica y ordenada, usando una forma de exposición más contemporánea y actual.

Además podemos encontrar elementos, como las velas, recorriendo los diferentes espacios y que nos conectan con ese ambiente sacro, íntimo y pausado evocando a los espacios religiosos de alrededor, creando una atmósfera calmada y serena.
