MAMAPAPA Residential House
The crooked MAMAPAPA Residential House located in a housing estate in Dúbravka, Bratislava, brings a new typological and typographic architectonic programme to this popular location.
The composition of two tower houses with different designs which intersect each other in the shape of an “L” delimits the rectangular floor area of the lot which was designed as an urban garden with colourful paving and tall trees planted on ball-shaped green mounds.
An open sunny atrium represents a monumental entryway to the residential complex. Instead of a crowded and over-heated car park, there is a public space with the front gardens of ground-floor apartments and a family centre in the parterre, the entryway to which is dominated by columns in the shape of MAMAPAPA letters that give a pop-aesthetic look to the entire complex. With its colourful tectonics of the synergy of men´s and women´s clothing principles, the two residential houses above the monumental name thus bring revival, humour and identity to the architectonic stereotype of mass housing.
The higher “men´s” residential section wears the white striped pyjamas of the facade with large extended “bay windows”, while the lower and longer “women´s” section of the complex is dynamized with a patchwork of colourful loggias with structural railings and flower ornaments on beige plaster.
The motto of family, familiarity, cosiness and homeliness is reflected not only in the symbolic façade’s décor but also in the topography of the exterior and interior premises, the semi-closed nature of which should simulate the resurrection of the feeling of solidarity of a residential community in the modern era of anonymity and ignorance. In addition to shared premises in the parterre, the residential community may also enjoy a roof terrace which is a product of efficient design of individual apartment layouts.
MAMAPAPA has an ambition to bring the issue of community housing – which has been avoided by developers for a long time – to the portfolio of typological housing strategies. An orthogonal island of an authentic environment, modern aesthetics and a new neighbourhood has thus appeared in the dense network of housing estates in Dúbravka.
