Scottish Design Award Nominations for 2008:
Public Building
Pier Arts Centre, Stromness, Orkney
Design: Reiach and Hall Architects
Pier Arts Centre, Stromness
A £2.8M, restoration, refurbishment and new-build of an internationally acclaimed arts venue within a conservation area of outstanding merit. It has been designed to be strikingly modern, yet complement the surrounding architecture – the stone houses and boat sheds that give Stromness its unique appeal.
Hazelwood School, Glasgow
Design: gm+ad architects
Hazelwood School, Glasgow
In Scotland, the importance of school design is complex. Alan Dunlop of Glasgow, Scotland-based Gordon Murray and Alan Dunlop Architects, observes that good architects recognize the significance of school architecture. “Good school design is important for children,” he notes, “for it says: ‘You are our future, and we recognize that you are special.’
Conan Doyle Medical Centre, Edinburgh
Design: Richard Murphy Architects
Conan Doyle Medical Centre, Edinburgh
This project originally began as a design for two doctors’ practices (a larger and a smaller practice) who wished to keep their identities and yet to share certain non-public facilities. The design in a semi-wooded site and adjacent to a local river, the Braidburn, is also adjacent to Cameron Toll Shopping Centre and includes the site of Liberton Bank House, a derelict cottage which had become famous as the place where Conan Doyle had spent his summer holidays.
Culloden Battlefield Memorial Centre, Highlands
Design: Gareth Hoskins Architects
Culloden Battlefield Memorial Centre
The project, which includes the reinterpretation and reinstatement of the landscape of the battlefield and a new 1000 sqm museum, was designed in collaboration with international exhibition designers, Ralph Appelbaum Associates, with input from a wide range of historians and archaeologists.
