Portobello Shop Flagship in SP, Brazil

On Alameda Gabriel Monteiro da Silva, in São Paulo, the first Portobello Shop flagship presents itself as an architectural exercise that shifts commercial space into the realm of experience. Designed by Isay Weinfeld, the project is grounded in a clear spatial organization logic, constructing a continuous narrative in which architecture, design, and use are articulated in an inseparable way.

Set within a building of approximately 2,000 sqm spread across four floors, the space abandons the traditional logic of a compartmentalized showroom and is instead structured as a fluid and open journey. More than a functional element, circulation takes on a central role by organizing flows and guiding visitors through the different environments. Along this route, unfolding across multiple levels, visitors move through a sequence of spaces, at times more intimate, at others more expansive, according to their intended use.

Spatial Structure

Within a palette of neutral tones, intentional blocks of color, and a restrained language, the architecture distributes the spaces across multiple levels, defined by vertical planes of varying heights, all beneath a single slab. Alongside it, a long and continuous opening extending around the store’s entire perimeter brings natural light and the greenery of the surrounding treetops into the interior and, balanced with carefully placed lighting points, acts as an active element in shaping the atmospheres, emphasizing transitions and enhancing the spaces throughout the journey. “The project is based on a clear organization of flows and proportions, seeking an architecture that guides movement naturally, without excess,” says Isay Weinfeld.

Access is provided through a generous front garden that establishes a gradual transition between the street and the store. With the storefront display located on the upper floor, the façade at pedestrian level appears opaque; it is only upon entering that the space fully reveals itself as a large double-height atrium, where a cut-out mezzanine overlooks a central void.

Staircases distributed throughout different points connect the ground floor and mezzanine through paths that vary in width and proportion, creating a circulation dynamic that invites exploration. Along this route, the products are incorporated into the architecture itself — not only through display furniture, but also through walls, floors, and surfaces that simultaneously function as space and showcase. The coverings no longer occupy an isolated role and instead structure the experience, presented at full scale and in real-life applications.

The fully glazed mezzanine ensures abundant natural light and establishes a direct relationship with the surrounding treetops. Beneath it, decorated environments are arranged as experiential spaces that can expand into landscaped outdoor areas, reinforcing the continuity between interior and exterior.

In this context, the brand’s portfolio is incorporated as a constitutive part of the architecture. The coverings move beyond an isolated display role and instead structure Portobello Shop’s flagship the space itself, applied across continuous planes, vertical and horizontal surfaces, and different layout solutions. This approach allows the materials to be perceived at full scale and in real-life contexts, expanding their reading beyond the sample format. The flagship brings together more than 1,000 SKUs and approximately 2,400 m² of surfaced areas distributed throughout the journey.

The organization of the floors combines exhibition areas with spaces dedicated to permanence and interaction, such as a café, lounge environments, and modular areas that allow different usage configurations. On the upper level, the rooftop expands the program by incorporating an open space intended for events and activations, reinforcing the project’s relational dimension. The landscaping, designed by Rodrigo Oliveira, contributes to the integration with the surroundings and to environmental comfort strategies, establishing continuity between interior and exterior.

The landscape was conceived as a living frame capable of enhancing the surfaces, textures, and tones of the coverings presented in the store, establishing a sensitive dialogue between mineral and vegetal elements. The proposal adopts a tropical naturalistic garden language, with dense plant masses and native trees that, in addition to reinforcing Brazilian landscape identity, help attract wildlife and bring nature closer to everyday urban life.

The front garden frames and complements the building’s façade. The vegetation composition is organized into different layers that structure the arrival, creating green volumes that highlight the architecture and direct the gaze toward the exhibition spaces.

At the rear of the land, the project reveals a more secluded and immersive garden, almost like a secret garden, where the vegetation becomes denser and more enveloping. This space creates a moment of pause within the store experience, offering an atmosphere of contemplation and reinforcing the relationship between landscape and architecture. On the terrace, the landscaping acts as a green crowning element for the architecture, expanding the presence of nature throughout the complex.

Developed entirely in BIM (Building Information Modeling), the project featured integrated modeling across disciplines, ensuring construction precision and a high level of coordination. In addition, the flagship was designed to achieve LEED Platinum and WELL Platinum certifications, incorporating solutions focused on energy efficiency, water management, and indoor environmental quality. Strategies adopted include high-efficiency HVAC systems, water capture and reuse, intelligent lighting control, and continuous performance monitoring.

More than a retail space, the project positions itself as a synthesis between architecture and brand, in which the physical environment acts as an extension of Portobello Shop’s design thinking. “The flagship translates our vision of design applied to physical space, integrating architecture and portfolio in a way that is coherent with the brand’s strategy,” says Romael Soso, Vice President of Retail and Innovation at Portobello Grupo and CEO of Portobello Shop.
