Fisht, the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Stadium designed by Populous, has been featured on a commemorative 100 rouble banknote commissioned by the Central Bank of Russia to celebrate the forthcoming Winter Olympics.

The bank started issuing the notes at the end of October, a hundred days before the start of the Games and 20 million notes have gone into production. The design of the banknote depicts the Sochi Stadium on one side and a flying snowboarder on the other; it is the first Russian banknote ever to feature a vertically orientated image.
The commemorative banknote has once again underlined the importance and value of architecture in major international sporting events as significant as the Olympic Games and Populous has expressed its delight in the depiction of the Sochi Stadium on the new note.

Damon Lavelle, Principal at Populous said,
“It’s a great honour to have our design for the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games immortalised on the currency of the host nation. We support and welcome the recognition given to the importance of architectural design in major sporting events.
“I am a firm believer in the power of our designs, which always enhance the experience of sport, something that was clearly demonstrated by the atmosphere of the London 2012 Olympic Stadium. Sochi 2014 promises to be another great Games and I can’t wait to see the stadium brought to life by athletes and spectators from across the world.”

The commemorative 100 rouble note comes closely after the recently launched new-look Irish passport, which features the Populous-designed Aviva Stadium in Dublin among other iconic Irish landmarks including Croagh Patrick, Kylemore Abbey and Croke Park.
All Irish passports issued from October will feature the new design.
