In 2004, Gareth Hoskins Architects were runners up to Zaha Hadid in the Transport Museum design competition, which is being built on the banks of the River Clyde and were also selected to work on proposals for the Pacific Quay Masterplan in Glasgow which surrounds the BBC’s new headquarters.

Hoskins Architects are one of the leading architecture and design practices in the UK. The practice’s innovative and people focused designs have resulted in a wide range of prominent projects both throughout the UK and abroad. The imaginative and responsive buildings, environments and designs that result from the practice’s approach have been widely recognised through major press coverage and a string of national exhibitions and awards, including the award as the Best Young Architectural Practice in the UK.

The Paul Hogarth Company (TPHC) was established in October 1990 and is now one of Northern Ireland’s and Scotland’s leading landscape architecture practices, providing urban design, master planning, landscape architecture and project management services on a wide range of projects for both public and private sector clients. The firm is dedicated to high design and performance standards from initial analysis stages through to completion. In recent years, the practice has gained extensive experience of urban regeneration projects, including the undertaking of city centre and neighbourhood regeneration strategies.

TPHC have developed a specialism in urban planning and design, and in particular the design and implementation of public realm improvement works and streetscape projects for numerous cities, towns and villages. TPHC also have considerable experience in the design and implementation of projects in sensitive historic areas, with many projects undertaken in conservation areas, outstanding conservation areas and world heritage sites.

TPHC has recently been awarded the Civic Trust Public Realm Award for Custom House Square and Cathedral Quarter Streetscapes in Belfast.

Hoskins & Hogarth compete with Hadid

6 teams of consultants, including 2 from the UK, a collaborative team comprising Gareth Hoskins Architects with Landscape Architects The Paul Hogarth Company (TPHC), and Zaha Hadid Architects, have been invited to participate in an international competition for the masterplanning of a 23.2Ha site adjacent to the Baltic spa town of Jurmala in Latvia. Andrew Haley of TPHC was invited to take part in the Jurmala competition following a visit to Latvia and Lithuania organised by UK Trade & Investment in 2005.

Jurmala, due to a mild climate, has become a popular spa town and has many fine examples of wooden architecture ranging from classical to modern. The 1km long site lies at the end of a peninsula at the mouth of the River Lielupe and is to include new housing, hotel, leisure and conference facilities. The teams will develop ideas for the regeneration of the site during a 4 day event, organised by Buvkonsultants, to be held in Jurmala from the 25th – 28th May. The schemes will be judged by a panel of 9 experts with American architect Gunars Birkerts, urbanist and academic Sigurds Grava from Columbia University NY and Aigars Tampe representing Jurmala City Council.

The site in Jurmala, near the Latvian capital of Riga is ‘unique’, commented Andrew Haley of TPHC. ‘Located between the dune landscape of the Bay of Riga and the mouth of the River Lielupe, the 23.2Ha site has wonderful potential. The drawings that are required for the competition, and which we need to produce during the four day ‘workshop’ next week, will need to articulate a dynamic vision to transform the industrial land into a vibrant, high value mixed use development.’

The Announcement will take place on the 28th May 2006 and will be followed by a publication and a public exhibition.
