Sustainable Hamad Airport Expansion Opens for The FIFA World Cup 2022
As The FIFA World Cup 2022 host, Doha has started the expansion of the Hamad International Airport (HIA) Central Concourse Project in 2019 to accommodate more than 58 million passengers annually. The project is completed and opened in November 2022.
Located south of Doha, HIA connects itself to the world as an international hub. HIA is set to further redefine the passenger experience, through this new expansion project, delivering a vibrant destination in Qatar. With efficient environmentally friendly measures, the project design achieved LEED Silver Certification and Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS) 4-Star ratings recognition.
The project consists of two phases of development. The completed Phase 1 development includes a central concourse that is expanded from the existing terminal, linking to the North Node. The design concept of the roof respects and continues the sweeping, dune like form of the existing terminal.
A column-free and long-span 85m grid shell structure supported by 3 funnels has adopted a gradually fritted glazed canopy for natural focused light penetration and temperature control, which supports the interior greenery to continuously grow and embrace the visitors. Encountering the typical Middle East climate, the funnels are designed to enhance the collection of sand and rain that is often brought by sandstorms and rainstorms. Through abundant landscaping, rainwater harvesting, grey water, natural daylight and north facing skylights, the project focuses on enhancing and managing the limited resources to maximise the benefits for the building.
To design a humane airport infrastructure, the expansion project emphasises ecology and sustainability. The expansion includes a 6,000 sq m indoor tropical garden spanning all 3 floors, showcasing sustainably sourced greenery in a spacious interior. With over 300 trees ranging in height up to 16m tall planted to create a serene atmosphere to visitors. A 125m long sky bridge within the tree canopies as well as a water feature complements the greenery to offer a unique travel experience with a seamless integration among nature, architecture and humans.
The mixed-use functional programs enables a diverse airport experience which can enjoy the view of the garden. The destination-to-be terminal includes over 16,000 sq m branded retail spaces and F&B outlets, enhancing the flow and commercial value of the airport. A world-class 7,500 sq m business lounge overlooking the garden from Level 2 is created to support the expansion of the passenger terminal lounge allowing guests to enjoy superior leisure amenities as in spas, gyms and business centres.
The combined first and second phases of the expansion will provide an additional 24 contact stands and 22 bus gates, allowing the terminal to operate at more than double its current.
To support the expansion of the passenger terminal, Aedas also developed a new Remote Transfer Baggage Facility storing up to 10,000 early baggage.
Aedas Executive Principal Simon Griffiths commented, “We are delighted to have participated in the central concourse expansion project, designing an awarded and sustainable terminal opened in time to provide a new and unique gateway experience to passengers for The FIFA World Cup and future large-scale international events. HIA will continue to be the award-winning airport of choice, and we are glad that through our immersive and nature inspired design, we have been able to continue that legacy and design for the airport for the future”
