Mercantel Restaurant in Portugal

The Mercantel Restaurant, a beloved institution in Aveiro for the past fifty years, is situated in the historic area of Cais dos Mercantéis. Recently, the restaurant has undergone a major transformation as part of an effort by its new management to bring a fresh perspective to this cherished space.

The goal of the refurbishment was to infuse the restaurant with a contemporary aesthetic while honoring its legacy, establishing a renewed identity to signal the start of an exciting new chapter. This reimagining was conducted in close collaboration with the new chef, who played an integral role in defining both the culinary and atmospheric direction of the space. The intention was to create a seamless and comprehensive dining experience that connects the cuisine, design, and overall ambiance in a cohesive, hedonistic manner.

The design concept was driven by an aspiration to provide an intimate atmosphere, achieved through a thoughtful selection of earthy colors and warm lighting. These elements were carefully chosen to evoke relaxation, comfort, and a sense of familiarity, making guests feel immediately at ease. Central to the layout are two large communal tables and three counters, strategically placed to foster a spirit of sharing and interaction among patrons. For those seeking more private dining experiences, individual tables are thoughtfully arranged alongside a large, common sofa, providing a balance between social engagement and personal space.

Mercantel’s culinary offerings are inspired by the Mediterranean, a theme that permeates not only the menu but also the decor. The restaurant’s ambiance reflects the beauty and calm of Mediterranean landscapes, transforming each visit into a retreat from the daily routine. Beyond being a mere dining spot, Mercantel aims to be a place where patrons create lasting culinary memories, savoring each dish within a setting designed for immersive relaxation.

A central feature of the redesigned space is the open kitchen, which remains in direct visual contact with the dining area. This layout allows guests to observe the entire dish preparation process, fostering a sense of transparency and authenticity. By showcasing the chef’s culinary techniques, the open kitchen bridges the divide between the kitchen and the diners, enhancing the shared dining experience. This intentional design choice reinforces a connection between the chef and guests, embodying Mercantel’s values of openness and familiarity. Completed in 2023, the updated 216-square-meter space captures a sense of both tradition and innovation, making Mercantel a true celebration of Mediterranean dining in the heart of Aveiro.
