Russian Cultural Centre and Orthodox worship Paris

The Paris Russian Spiritual and Cultural Centre was designed to visually and spatially express the symbolism involved in Russian culture and in Russian Orthodox worship, in the very specific urban setting of Quai Branly, Avenue Rapp, the River Seine and the Eiffel Tower.
We positioned the Cultural Centre in continuity with the Palais de l’Alma in a simple geometric figure turning around a large hardscaped internal square accessible from Avenue Rapp.
Its envelope in gilded wood and glass are in contrast with Paris stone while evoking the materials of Russian traditional icons. It is deployed along Avenue Rapp, alternating opacity and transparency, on the internal garden and on the church up to the tower that symbolically marks the entrance to the spiritual space. The orthodox church located in the middle of the plot, between the garden and the hardscaped square, is surrounded by a slightly elevated esplanade with large vertical panels in light-coloured alabaster that have an engraved relief traditional cross motif inherited from Russian spiritual culture.
Near the sky, this motif is perforated to create an impression of mirroring and lightness and also to allow a view of the metal facetted domes located on the church’s eastward-facing central axis of prayer and on the altar chapels.
