Piha House, Auckland
Nestled into the rainforest of the Waitakere Ranges, west of Auckland, Piha House is a compact two bedroom home was built on a tricky site with a modest budget, but maximises the stunning views and connection with nature.
What was the brief?
The brief was for a compact two bedroom house that captured the views of Lion Rock and the Tasman Sea to the West and the rainforest views to the east. The home was to be sensitive to the unique setting, with natural materials selected to blend in with the surrounding environment
What were the solutions?
A compact two bedroom house was designed with a gently sloping roof form to fit within the small building envelope allowed, while providing a sense of volume within the spaces. The offset form of the plan provides a sheltered outdoor area where the epic views of the Tasman Sea can be enjoyed while being protected from the strong westerly winds. Natural materials of stained cedar shiplap and dark profiled metal cladding allow the house to settle comfortably within the rainforest setting.
What were the key challenges?
The site was a sloping triangular shape in an area of natural significance. This meant that strict planning regulations constrained the size and volume of the house, as well as restricting the material selections on the exterior.
This was the clients first home and the budget was modest.
What building methods were used?
The house is a lightweight timber framed construction, with cedar shiplap and profiled metal cladding. Tasmanian Oak flooring and screening is used in the interior along with plywood lining and green mosaic tiles to draw the colours and textures from the surrounding rainforest into the house.
