Architecture as an extension of the artwork. It was based on this premise that the Brazilian studio Arkitito developed the exhibition design for SOL, an exhibition by Brazilian artist Luiza Gottschalk presented in New York. The project transforms the exhibition space into an immersive experience, where architecture, color, materials, and light act as an extension of the paintings.
With spatial curation by the firm led by Tito and Chantal Ficarelli, the exhibition is based on the idea of creating an atmosphere that amplifies the sensory power of the works. The walls in deep tones evoke the density of the rainforest, while the golden metallic floor reflects light and introduces a sunny, vibrant quality to the space, drawing visitors closer to the narrative constructed by the artist.
More than just a neutral backdrop for the paintings, the exhibition design creates a space that actively engages the visitor. The layout was designed to evoke contrast, a sense of permanence, and immersion, bringing art and architecture together through a shared emotional language.
Known for its distinctive approach and for projects that straddle architecture, interiors, and spatial experiences, Arkitito brings to SOL a vision that speaks directly to the brand’s core values: creative freedom, uniqueness, and the pursuit of spaces that evoke sensations. The intervention also reinforces an increasingly prominent aspect of the firm’s work: the development of institutional and cultural scenography and exhibition design.
“The exhibition design emerged as an extension of the artwork. We wanted visitors not only to observe the paintings, but to enter an atmosphere built around them,” explains the firm.
The exhibition highlights Arkitito’s interest in exploring hybrid territories between art, architecture, and experience, creating spaces where matter, light, and perception interact in an integrated way. In SOL, the environment ceases to be a backdrop and becomes part of the exhibition’s narrative itself.
