Located on the corner of tranquil, tree-lined East 84th Street, just one block from Central Park and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1122 Madison Avenue is a boutique luxury condominium that carries forward the enduring character of the Upper East Side. Designed in a timeless architectural language and drawing inspiration from New York’s grand prewar apartment houses, the building is thoughtfully scaled to feel intimate and personal while meeting modern expectations for comfort, craftsmanship, and livability.

1122 Madison Avenue is designed by Wiliam Sofield of Studio Sofield, a modernist by temperament and a historicist by training, who has spent more than four decades redefining the art of living through design. With a rare ability to harmonize classical references with contemporary sensibilities, Sofield’s architectural and interior work reflects a deep understanding of both aesthetic integrity and human experience.

Situated on a rare corner lot, 1122 Madison Avenue commands four prominent façades with exposures to the north, south, east, and west, including striking diagonal views toward the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir. Recognizing the responsibility of building in such a visible and storied setting, Sofield approached the project with deep respect for its surroundings, engaging the neighborhood’s architectural language while maintaining a distinct identity of its own. Guided by proportion, precision, and craftsmanship, he conceived the building “in the round,” treating it as a sculptural, three-dimensional form so that it is experienced from every vantage point rather than defined by a single “front.”

Inspired by the disciplined “tautness” of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s façade, Sofield carefully calibrated the building’s massing and articulation to its primary vantage points, reinforcing its presence within the surrounding cityscape while grounding it in the neighborhood’s architectural character through a refined contemporary lens.

Clad in Indiana limestone—chosen for its timeless elegance, connection to New York’s architectural golden age, and natural patina—the façade is richly detailed with carved stone reliefs, sculptural ornamentation, and deep-set windows framed by sculpted rope trim that nod to its historic context. Terraces, balconies, and Juliet balconies feature custom railings seamlessly integrated into the massing, culminating in a refined crown that completes 1122 Madison Avenue’s classic New York silhouette.

Each carved relief introduces depth and shadow that shift throughout the day as light moves across the surface, while a deliberate window hierarchy and measured rhythm reinforce proportion and verticality, subtly drawing the eye upward. At the same time, intentional asymmetry breaks down the massing, reflects the varied interior layouts, and preserves a human-scaled, residential character.

At the entrance, Argent limestone is paired with integrated sconces and flanked by custom sculptural planters. A champagne-hued metal doorway with bespoke Studio Sofield handles welcomes residents and the warm finishes shift with the natural light and rhythm that harmonizes with the streetscape.
